What needs to be done and by whom to know that you are? Who knows I am? Who is this ultimate knower? Because of what are you? How did you come to be; from no being to being and then back to no being again? What was your position and status one hundred years back and prior to conception in the womb, prior to the arising of consciousness? How did all this take place without your permission? Did you choose any of this, and has anything really and truly happened at all? A hundred years back you had no problems. They are there now. Why and how? Until you find it out, your misery will remain intact despite your so-called knowledge of God or Brahman.
You see, once the inquiry begins along these lines all of your acquired conceptual knowledge and certainties begin to unravel and collapse like a house of cards. The false, the body-mind entity or identity simply can’t stand up to investigation and is then seen to be false, dream like and insubstantial like the child of a barren woman. If I am not the body or the mind then what am I? This is what needs to be known and inquired into if I really want to be free of time, and to see that this freedom from the known, which is the dead weight of yesterday and all acquired knowledge; then it is seen that this very freedom from the known is the first and only freedom.
When does time begin? It begins now, presently, and when does it end? It ends now as well. So as it is beginning it is also ending, therefore beginning and ending are only ‘seeming’ to happen in this timeless Omnipresence, this ever-present unqualified immediacy. Time when looked into is thus seen to be nothing but a mental concept, non existent and imaginary like the horns on a hare, water in a mirage, or silver in the mother of pearl shell.
Time is thought and thought breeds fear if it is not understood. Thinking which is the basis of the imaginary thinker and his or her thought, is nothing but a vibration or movement of energy. Notice that in fact you are not choosing your thoughts, they arise spontaneously by themselves and then move on effortlessly as well if they are not resisted, attached to, or fixated on. If you were choosing your thoughts why would you ever have a hateful, fearful, angry, jealous, or unhappy thought? You certainly wouldn’t choose to be that way if you did have any choice in the matter. Who would choose to be fearful, hateful, angry, jealous or unhappy? I know that I certainly wouldn’t choose to be that way if I had a choice.
Thinking is nothing but energy vibrating. Energy in itself is pure energy, all-energy or Omnipotence, and this Omnipotence that is being pointed to is all-power – not mind power, thought power, higher power or lower power, your power or my power, but simply energy suffused with intelligence – Rigpa in Dzogchen – is emptiness suffused with awareness – and, non conceptual awareness, is Dzogchen, ‘The Great Perfection’ – self-existing, self-knowing, self-shining, ever-fresh presence awareness just this, nothing else, and I am THAT! – this limitless activity of knowing.
Just SEE, am I unaware right now? Obviously not, of course I am aware, but that awareness ‘as it is’ is space-like and so is not a thing or an object, and so all apparent things and objects are contained in It, and not the other way round. This space of knowing-awareness contains everything but nothing contains it. The so called things and objects appearing in this space or awareness-emptiness are nothing but the space itself. Form can be nothing but emptiness, and emptiness can be nothing but form. This is the ‘heart’, the ‘Prajnaparamita’ of understanding! “Form is emptiness, emptiness is form, form does not differ from emptiness, emptiness does not differ from form. The same is true with feelings, perceptions, mental formations, and consciousness.”
This emptiness is a cognizing-emptiness, an awake, aware, no thing, that is not perceivable or conceivable yet it ever is. You cannot see energy but you can see its results as the very life or livingness spontaneously appearing as a ‘display’, that is the manifest universe. It has no duration, no time, as it is a spontaneous throb, pulsation, vibration, or what we call Spanda in the non dual philosophy of Kashmir Shavism, and the Shiva Sutras of Hinduism; somewhat of a movement.
In the experience of yogins who do not perceive things
the fact that things manifest without truly existing is so amazing
they burst into laughter.
everything is unobstructed, vivid yet ephemeral,
random, without any reference point.
You perceive, hear, are aware, experience, and feel,
as never before.
“What is this? Are my perceptions by nature those of a lunatic?
Am I in a dream?”
You burst out laughing at yourself!
You cannot negate it, you cannot say I am not, you know that you are, but what you are you don’t know. What you are is inconceivable, unknowable as any thing or object, it simply ‘is’, full stop!
This body and all other bodies are insentient and corpse like, the sentience or life force that animates them, the very godliness of them is the consciousness that is universal, dynamic, and fully manifest, imminent and transcendent. This consciousness is everything there is and the Self, the non dual Absolute is the light of consciousness. Light is life or livingness and there is only life, there is no one who lives a life. This light of consciousness is love-light, the loving to be inherent in all sentient beings and is the ananda or bliss aspect of reality as Sat-Chit-Ananda – Existence-Consciousness-Bliss.
These three aspects are not three different things but three aspects of the One no thing – awareness-emptiness, truth, suchness, reality or non duality.
“The Self pervades the universe and by its light all this insentient universe is illumined.” See and be this Self alone – non dual One without a second, not two, never two, only THAT! What could be simpler than that? So it is important to realize or re-cognize this Absolute or ground of being. Nothing can be added to or taken away from this Absolute, if it could then it would not be Absolute, so this is the turning point, which is no point at all; the complete turning about, and reversal of the attention one hundred and eighty degrees from looking outward to looking back, to SEE where the actual seeing is spontaneously occurring or taking place from.
To see where you are seeing from is the true seeing – seeing into emptiness – “Seeing into nothingness – this is true seeing and eternal seeing.” Self-realization, according to Ramana Maharshi, “is like gazing into vacancy,” into an emptiness in which even “the thought ‘I am Brahman’ has to vanish.” Realize “There is only my-Self, Consciousness.” Also, “The world you perceive is made up of consciousness: what you call matter is consciousness itself.” – Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.
“The Absolute is none of the things of which It is the source; its nature(Nisarga, primordial, fundamental nature being quality less) is that nothing can be affirmed of It – not existence, not essence, not life – It transcends all these. But possess yourself of It by the very elimination of being, and you hold a marvel.” THIS you must come to know!
Now all of this that is being expressed here is just a concept, it is not the reality, the suchness that it is pointing to, however the words expressed may cause something to resonate in the hearer that was always present yet somehow obscured, overlooked or ignored. This so called turning around in the being and beginning to question everything that you have ever known or been told by your parents, teachers and society, and everything and anything you have ever learned from the early age of two and a half years or so and onwards to the present moment. If this very necessary questioning of all of your acquired learned knowledge really begins in earnest and a genuine inquiry follows along these lines, then it will definitely be seen by no one in particular that the false, the “me” of memory, the so called ‘person’ So and So, cannot and will not be able to stand up to this investigation.
It will be like a lighted match thrown into a bale of cotton. It will begin to smolder away continually until the entire bale is consumed. If something is seen to be false and illusory you will not be able to believe in it again. If the “me” is seen to be false, then what must you be and where does that leave you? It leaves you here and now present and aware, so this space-like awareness is what you must be, it is the base of everything and not just a momentary appearance like the reflections that appear in the mirror. The mirror needs something outside of itself in order for things and objects to reflect in it, however this immediacy of unborn awareness has nothing outside or inside of itself, it is self-existing, self-shining, ever fresh, presence awareness, just this, nothing else!
Don’t pretend to be what you are not – this limited time-bound entity. Don’t refuse to be what you are – this ever-present unqualified immediacy, this non dual Absolute or Suchness. On having no head, there at zero degrees from your Self. Not only is there no head there at zero degrees, there are no eyes, ears, neck, body, or mind or anything else whatsoever there in that naked space of all- knowing emptiness. Zen and the re-discovery of the obvious, closer even than hands and feet, closer than your own breathing, closer even than the life-force itself.
Everyone of us is the seeming prodigal son, whom with the father’s permission on coming of age, and receiving an inheritance, has wandered into the far land and having depleted our inheritance there we have now seemingly become impoverished. In the far land, out there on the periphery there is suffering, life and death, but not here at the center, the Heart, the very core of all being. This is the Father’s House, the home that you have never left, and it is not His will that you suffer and die, and His will is your own will. Here in your native land you are the proof of God. See that before there can be any God, you as this space of knowing have to be there first and foremost, you are the First Person, present tense, singular – I am. The world, the universe depends on You and not the other way round. Not seeing THIS you may have very seriously underestimated your Self. See that I am THAT!Read More »
What is awareness? Is the ‘word’ awareness the actual awareness itself? No, the acquired word or language is never the thing that it is pointing to. The word awareness is not awareness. Any word that we use is only a label we apply to this nameless essence that is the very livingness that is life. Life in itself is timeless, the everlasting life referred to in the scriptures, and there is no death in it. Death is only for the “me”, the ego, the imagined separate entity. This life that is being pointed to lives on itself and so it is ever increasing.
If it is looked at closely, that is at zero degrees from where you are looking or seeing; right there at zero degrees is your “glassy essence” that Shakespeare referred to in his play, ‘Measure for Measure’ – “Man, proud man, dressed in a little brief authority(that short lived body-mind entity or persona) and ignorant of what he is most assured, his ‘glassy essence'(his transparency-emptiness), like an angry ape plays such tricks before the high heaven as would make the angels weep.”
This glassy essence, this Such-ness, or what we call That, in the maha vakya or great mantra of Advaita Vedanta in Hinduism – I am That! is life, the activity of knowing, the very livingness itself. Indicating that there is only life, there is no one who lives a life. There is not life – the animating life-force or life essence, the very godliness of you so to speak, and a separate or imagined entity or person Mr or Mrs So and So who is living a life. Life is what we call That, for the want of a better word; as no word, concept or symbol can possibly encompass this very actuality of what is, this non dual Absolute or “glassy essence”.
This being the case, then you must be life, you are life; you are That non dual Absolute, the everlasting life that is referred to in all of the major religions – I am That! Thou art That! All this is That! and possibly the greatest statement ever uttered or written – I am That I am! from the King James Bible. In spite of this one seems to loose sight of this truth of one’s inherent being or essence, as it gets obscured or covered up by acquired words, language, and mental concepts in the very process of everyday life or living.
The word is never the thing and this is what needs to be seen. If this is seen then we can use the word with impunity and not be affected, otherwise the word uses us and is the cause of much psychological suffering. It is the word that tells us that we are not good enough, that we are limited, we are only human, we had a bad childhood, we have low self-esteem and so on. All, and I mean all of these concepts, words, and labels have been added and acquired by the assumed personal entity only after or around the age of two years old or so. Just see that you are not born with any words at all, the little child or baby is functioning quite naturally and spontaneously from the natural state for the first two years of life without even a single word or concept. What does this tell you? Christ in the New Testament – Unless you become as little children, natural and innocent, you cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven – “what is” prior to the world, prior to the the acquired and learn ed senses; and the world of phenomena or “appearance” is only imagination conjured up by learn ed words, concepts, and the different languages created by human beings for practical purposes only.
“The world even as it appears is only a concept, it is dream-like and unreal” – Nisargadatta Maharaj.
Thought is subtle word, and word is nothing but sound, vibration or energy. Thought being a vibration or movement of energy has to vibrate into the opposites. There is no other way that thought can function except dualistic ally in contrast or in the opposites. Good-bad, happy-sad, like-dislike, loving-hating etc. If this is understood then thought is not a problem and it can be useful and is not the enemy. However, if thought is not understood and is taken to be something substantial and tangible with an independent nature of its own, instead of just pure energy freely vibrating and expressing; and is then allowed to build up into a big unexamined story, like poor “me”, woe is me, or I am better or worse than others; this then becomes the cause of unnecessary psychological suffering.
And what we are saying here is that this psychological suffering is not necessary if the cause is ‘seen’ to be false. Obviously the cause of all problems and suffering is “me”, the ego, the imagined dead or static entity acquired after the age of two or three years, so that everything that occurs from that age and onwards is then referred back to. All of your problems then are problems of relationship and relationship is dualism , I, and other than I. Relationship means relative to. Relative to what? Relative to this dead image “me”, “I”, this phantom that comes into existence around the age of two years, the primal thought, the “I” thought, the ego, engendered by the parents, teachers, and society, which from then on becomes something solid, concrete and substantial, and it is never questioned from then on. No wonder then that there is conflict, separation, and confusion from then on when I am then pretending to be something or someone that I am not – this separate, limited, ‘person’ or thing. What we are saying is that there is no relationship in non duality! When this is seen that there is not two, never two at any point whatsoever, then all of your problems are solved.
You know, one asks, who is all this happening to? Well , its happening to “me” you say. Have you ever really examined or looked at that “me’? Does it have any substance or independent nature of its own, is it real, actual, and substantial? Have you ever asked yourself this? No, you dare not, because you might see how illusory it really is, you might see for yourself that the “me” that you have been taking yourself to be is unreal, a phantom, and you have too much investment in this mask or persona, this “me” of memory to really question it or see through it to the impersonal essence that is sustaining it and everything else as well. So your psychological suffering continues on unabated, and it will continue on until you question this “me” that you continue to take yourself to be in spite of anything that might be said or pointed to here in this present spontaneous expression. You may be still hoping and praying that someone from outside, some imagined god, guru, or savior will do this inquiry for you, but it is never going to happen like that, simply because there is no duality in non duality, there never has been and there never could be be, there is only THAT non dual Absolute.
Absolute means absolute, and there is nothing that can be added to it or taken away from it, so where exactly does that leave you? It leaves you here and now present and aware as you have always and ever been. This is the very ignorance that is being pointed out here again and again so to speak. You are ignorant of your true nature or natural state, you don’t know who and what you truly and ever are – THIS awake, aware, silence and stillness, THIS no thing at the very core or heart of your being is what you always and ever are.
However, this that is being pointed to is no thing to the mind, just an empty cognizance or naked non conceptual knowing and that is why it is being ignored, because the acquired dead entity, the “me” of memory, the person, does not want to be nothing or no thing; namely this space-like awareness-emptiness that is ever present silence and stillness. And that is the principal reason why, as Nisargadatta Maharaj pointed out to me, that “there are no customers for this knowledge.” The so called hearer naturally resists what is being pointed to here, as generally there is no one in the Maya or world appearance who wants to be nothing or no thing – unborn awareness-emptiness.

Maharaj: The core of this consciousness is knowingness, to know “I Am”. It is not a personality, not an individual. It is total manifestation. Being-ness is there, it fills everything.
Nevertheless, this quality “I Am” is the result of the material , objective body. In the seed the whole tree is latent; in the droplet “I Am” all three worlds are squeezed in.
The highest state is the state of a jnani. The first step is to be that droplet. In the process of knowing that droplet, you are out of it, and that is a jnani. A jnani is not obsessed by any calamities or any problems, because he had transcended the “I Am” principal. He watches the play as a witness.
Now, understand clearly. This “droplet” of knowingness is a result of the food essence body; in understanding it, you are out of it. If this last step is taken, knowing that I, the Absolute, am not that “droplet”, the consciousness, it has to happen only once. There is no more involvement with the play of the consciousness. You are in a state of no return, the eternal state.
Whatever you think of as spiritual knowledge was gained in the realm of consciousness; such knowledge is merely a burden on your head and it is going to add more misery. It’s nothing more than spiritual jargon. This “I Am—ness” is the very core of all misery.
Are you in such a position that you cannot employ any words to express your Self? When I answer your questions at great length, you should be reduced to a quietude out of which no words can come.
I expound this knowledge completely and thoroughly. Have you the courage to accept it?
If you have really understood what I have told you, you need not come again. Do not try to tell these things to all and sundry, just don’t speak of this elsewhere.
In spite of Nisargadatta’s indication here that this knowledge or teaching is not for the general public, or for all and sundry as such; and that generally one should keep quiet about this, simply imbibe what he is saying for yourself and resist the temptation to blab about this to other ignorant seekers and immature folk in general. Others who were present there in the loft room at 10th Lane Khetwadi, Bombay, around the time that I was present there for 11 months during 1976-77, and then onwards to his death in September 1981, could not help themselves and so took it on themselves to blurt out this non dual teaching to everyone and anyone who might happen to come along. Nisargadatta Maharaj did not give permission to anyone to speak on his behalf.
I won’t mention any names here, but you will know who I am referring to , as some of these folk have gained a small following and some name and fame in trying to popularise this and make it into some type of pop guru phenomena that every Tom, Dick, or Harry, regardless of whether or not there is any genuine earnestness or passion for Self-knowledge on their part, can easily grasp and take delivery of. Needless to say then that they had zero success in passing this on to anyone and everyone who listens to them; as generally the listeners are listening out of curiosity and so have turned this authentic teaching expression into an entertainment. This Self-knowledge does not come at such a cheap price, and it costs you the world, your pride, and your ego; a price which very, very few are prepared to pay. It is rare that anyone really grasps this or takes delivery of it, in spite of everything that has been said by these self-appointed authorities and gurus.
It was reported that a lot of these folk who attended the meetings of these self-appointed gurus were helped in the general functioning of their worldly lives. They have their reward then – public acclaim and respectability as being very spiritual and knowledgeable; however this is utterly useless because there is still a person or an entity there that is being helped, and what we are saying is that the person in not real! This is directly pointed out in chapter 12 of the now classic book by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj called “I AM THAT”, page 30 of the old edition, the very heading of this chapter reads – The Person is not Reality. Perhaps one might have another read of it some time if there is any genuine interest in this ‘great matter’ of know thyself. You have to be beyond the need for any help whatsoever, and a total light to your Self with the fearless courage to ‘be’ as nothing or no thing, the courage to stand alone, One without a second so to speak, independent of any and all authority, empty of all personal history and self-importance.
“I do not want meek and humble disciples, I want them to be powerful, as I am. I do not make disciples, I make Gurus.
I want you to jump into the test tube in the process of this investigation.”
“You are tenaciously clinging to the body as yourself. You must have a firm conviction that you are not the body, and not even the consciousness in the being-ness.
Nothing is useful, no talk is useful when one is by oneself. When one subsides in one’s true identity, nothing matters, because nothing is. When “I” subsides, its all awareness.”
“The greatest challenge lies in looking at oneself – by being “alone” with oneself.”
“Not only is the body-mind unreal, but this manifest consciousness, this universe, is also unreal. The “I Am-ness” is dream-like, ephemeral.
Even the feeling of having understood is likely to lead one into a sense of illusion, because the individual thinks that he has found something to impart to others, but there is no individual.
It is easy to get totally lost when juggling words, by attaching too much importance to them. Just remember that the total functioning of the manifest happens through the friction of the five elements, and the talking which takes place is part of the total functioning. There is no question of anyone seeking a particular benefit for himself as an individual teacher.
Man identifies with the gross form, he neither recognises nor identifies with the manifest consciousness. All the activities go on because of the consciousness, but no one really understands it.”
A bit of a wake up call and a shock to the whole system, if what is said there really hits home, and it dawns on you that you have been carried away by words and concepts and living in your head for most of your life, and so have ignored this dynamic fully manifest consciousness. Ignorance is not bliss it is fear and insecurity, dense impenetrable darkness, a constant sense of lack and not being good enough, and constant psychological suffering.
Are you unaware right here and now, presently? No, you are not unaware, you are quite obviously aware. That awareness may be obscured by by a lot of thoughts, words, and concepts spontaneously arising on it, yet it is still ever-present or what we might call Omnipresent – I am That impersonal, unborn, non conceptual, awareness or essence, this alone is the truth that makes you free. But I don’t want THAT you see, I want to be something or someone, So and So who is apart from THAT Absolute, and this can never happen, so you can see my problem can’t you? I as the entity So and So insist on and prefer to be separate and apart from this limitless space of knowing which is an impossibility.
Is there any static point in space? Does space have any fixed reference point, any centre or circumference to it? How can space have any centre when space is nothing at all in that sense? This space of knowing, and you are knowing right now, doesn’t stand out, it has no dimensions, no form, no colour, no beginning or ending, no qualities of its own so to speak. SEE this space from the space itself, look now, at your immensity…..from your immensity….be that immensity…don’t think about it simply be still, be THAT. Man has to cease for it to be.
Nirvana ‘is’ when “me” the person is not! Nirvana is the highest good, the highest happiness, the un-become, the unmade, the unborn, the end of all sorrow and suffering, and the good news is, that – ‘Nirvana is visible in this life, inviting, attractive, accessible to the wise disciple.
The wheel is broken; the desire less is attained.
The river bed is dry; no water flow-eth;
No more the broken wheel will roll.
This is the end of sorrow.
The ridge pole is split and all the rafters are broken.
Oh house builder, you have been fully seen through and detected.
Never again to build this house of pain;
Hence safe pass I to deliverance.
If you take delivery of what is being pointed to here, you, just like the Buddha will also be able to say this with total and firm conviction. This body-mind is something new and recent to you is it not? It was not there 100 years or so back, and it is rather short lived. How and what were you prior to conception in the womb? I know my true position, and how I was prior to the arising of the consciousness and prior to conception, and this you must also know if you want to be free of all suffering.
Will there be realisation of the Self even while the world is there(taken as real)? There will not be. Why? The seer and the object seen are are like the rope and the snake. Just as the knowledge of the rope which is the substratum will not arise unless the illusory serpent goes, so the realisation of the Self which is the substratum will not be gained unless the belief that the world is real is removed. When will the world which is the object seen be removed? When the mind, which is the cause of all cognition and of all actions, becomes quiescent, the world will disappear.
The mind is a good servant, but a terrible master. Is there a world when the mind is still without any thinking? If you stop the internal dialogue, you stop the world. Is there a mind or a world if you don’t think about it? Without a thought which is the mind using words, thoughts, concepts and labels, can you say anything is good or bad, happy or sad, existing or not existing? No you can’t, you have to go to the mind and thinking even to say, I am So and So. So do you even have a memory if you don’t think about it? No, you don’t! Therefore as Shakespeare contends – “Nothing is good or bad but thinking makes it so.” So, full stop! Pause the thinking even briefly and notice that the Self, pure being or what we call Sat, is ever-present untouched by any thinking or conceptualising; empty for all things and their qualities and their stresses, you can’t help being different from all that. It is your essential nature to remain unaffected, as unstained and uninjured and unstressed as your TV screen is by all the murders, and shootings and burnings that rage on it. As unsoiled as your mirror is by what it mirrors so faithfully and so unselectively.
Why are you ignorant? Ask yourself that, otherwise you will get nowhere pretending to be what you are not – that separate, miserable ‘person’ that presents its false face to the world every morning. The false can’t stand up to investigation. When you shine the light of inquiry and investigation into the deep and hidden recesses and areas of your mind where all the illusions, memories of pleasure and pain, and all the deep hurts from the dead past that you have been harboring all of your miserable life; and when all this is looked at in the clear light of awareness and it is seen that there is truly no such thing as mind there in that naked light of non conceptual all-knowing awareness, then all of your problems disappear in an instant.
“With a single stroke we are freed from bondage;
nothing clings to us and we hold nothing.
All is empty, clear, self-illuminating,
with no exertion of the mind’s power.
Here thought, feeling, knowledge and imagination
are of no value.
In this world of Such-ness
there is neither self nor other-than-self.
Just be as you are in the natural state. Leave everything “as it is”, don’t try to change anything. Things will change by themselves without your personal intervention. This is what wisdom really is. Wisdom is not ignorance, you are THAT!
“The habit of considering Self as the body has influenced everybody too much. The knowledge “I AM” is your Guru, be in it.
You all go on writing a diary of your own concepts – I tell you, finally, it is utterly useless. It will only serve as an instrument of bondage.”
Good enough. Hearing without ears, seeing without eyes? Hearing without an entity, a “hearer” interpreting everything. Seeing without any entity that is doing the seeing. Notice that the seeing is happening 24/7; the content of the seeing is changing but the ‘seeing’ itself is constant and that you the so called person or entity don’t have to kick start it or make it happen. The seeing is spontaneous and in this clear and empty seeing which is timeless and eternal and goes on forever, you can see forever, there at zero degrees from where the seeing is happening. You are outside time and space, nothing perceivable or conceivable. Time and space are in you the Self, the true seer. It is not the other way round, as it “appears” to be.Read More »
There is silence and stillness right here at the very core of your being. So start from the fact that you already are THAT limitless silence and stillness that ever is. You are certainly not the limited sentient human being that you appear to others and yourself to be, but rather the ‘you’ that you truly and ever are is THIS unknowable limitless immediacy that is silence and stillness. This space of all-knowing naked non conceptual awareness which is the natural state has never moved, changed or altered in any way whatsoever.
This ever lasting life is utterly free and unafraid, there is no death in it. Are you separate or apart from life? No? Then you must be THAT Supreme Reality or non dual Absolute that you are endlessly seeking and trying unsuccessfully to attain. It is the very search itself that is the problem, you already are THAT ineffable Self or immediacy that you can never find or be separate from because what you are seeking you already are, and no one else needs to confirm your being as there is a knowing present here and now that you are, and that can never be negated. You know that you are without having to consult any outside authority whether that be a God, guru, or anyone or anything else.
“You must realise first of all that you are the proof of everything, including yourself. None can prove your existence, because his existence must be confirmed by you first. Your being and knowing you owe nobody. Remember, you are entirely on your own. You do not come from somewhere, you do not go anywhere. You are timeless being and awareness.”
Don’t just mouth the words of the ancient saints, sages and seers, the Maha-Vakya or great word or statement of Hinduism – I am That! Thou are That! Actually realise or re-cognise the fact that yes, I am THAT! You don’t need any external guru or authority to tell you THIS, you know ‘I am’, without anyone having to tell you. Do I need to consult Jesus, Buddha, or Mahavira to know that I am? Of course not! Get the confidence and conviction for yourself that says and directly confirms the scriptural statement – Be still and ‘know’ that ‘I am’ is God. Not the God of the church, mosque, or temple which is man made, but the supreme reality, such-ness, or very ground of being, beyond being and non being. Don’t ‘think’ that I am is God, because that is only a mental concept or construct, directly know that I am; not the concept I am, but know that this very fact of your own being is God, Truth, or Reality.
You cannot negate your being. You cannot say I am not. You know that you are, good enough, full stop right there, don’t try to work this out in your mind, because you will never find any answer in your mind which is only acquired memories and imagination. There is really no such thing as mind. Bring your mind out here and let me have a good look at it! You know, this mind that is giving you all this trouble and psychological suffering and that is telling you that you are not good enough, that nobody loves you, and that you are not enlightened yet; whatever that means.
When you look for your mind you cannot find anything there at all that you could call mind apart from this awareness, this impersonal ever-present activity of knowing. THIS is the active side of infinity, This ever present, unqualified immediacy, this activity of knowing that I am, just This, nothing else! This border line between being and non being is the razor’s edge, the Moola Maya or root potential for endless universes that are exploding from this awesome nothing or on thing below the bottom line traced out right there at the region of you neck and shoulders area where your view of your upper body fade out completely into this nothing or no thing. If you care to LOOK, you can clearly SEE and notice on present evidence, that when you glance down from where you are truly seeing from, again on present evidence, you SEE an upside down torso which fades out completely and merges or folds into this nothing, no thing, or emptiness below this bottom line traced out at your neck and shoulders area, that ‘is’ the awesome ground of all being right there at zero degrees from where you are, and from where you have ever been.
“No longer so damned cocksure I know what it is like being me, I dare to start all over again and ‘bow before the evidence’ – actually as well as metaphorically. I bend and bow so deeply that I come to the very edge of me and my world, to the Bottom Line it all arises from. A frontier that doesn’t prevent me from gazing past it and in to the Infinite Source of All, brilliantly on display yet awesomely mysterious.”
The mind is time which has a beginning and an ending, but this being that we are pointing to here is timeless without any beginning or ending. You may say that in one hundred years time I will not be around, I will have died or disappeared. Yes, of course, but who knows this? You, the dynamic manifest consciousness knows this. Wouldn’t it be imperative to realise or re-cognise the very fact of this timeless immediacy right here and now so that this groundless fear and psychological suffering can end totally and be seen for the nothingness that it really is?
One of the keys to this understanding is the realisation or the knowledge that time is not real and that in fact time is only a mental concept. What time is there if you don’t think about it? None at all! Is there a past if you don’t think about it? No there is not! Is there a future if you don’t think about it? Of course there isn’t! There is no yesterday, no tomorrow, no today if you don’t think about it. “Nothing is good or bad but thinking makes it so.” So all of your problems are caused by the thinking when it is not properly understood. Thinking when it is understood is not a problem and can be quite useful, but when it is not understood it can vibrate into all sorts of opposites being dualistic in its nature, build up a mental image and a made up conceptual story, and thus cause endless psychological suffering that doesn’t really need to be there.
Thinking when it is understood is nothing but a vibration or movement of energy, in this limitless energy that is consciousness itself. Life is energy and energy is power, however this power that is life is Omnipotence – all power. There is nothing that is separate from this energy or Shakti (a Sanskrit term for energy or power). Everything that is appearing in the world of phenomena is Maya or illusion as pointed out in Advaita Vedanta(the truth and actuality of non duality) in Hinduism; simply because anything and everything that ‘appears’ is and can be nothing but energy, patterning and appearing in various shapes and forms as different from itself. One essence, energy, or Omnipotence expressing and appearing as everything. Even though it appears and expresses as the phenomenal universe(a universe made up of phenomena) it has still not changed its true nature of limitless intelligence, this ever-present activity of knowing.
See for yourself that there are ‘not two’ powers like good and evil, heaven and hell, God and the devil, etc; there is only one power , one essence, one reality and you are THAT no thing or emptiness-awareness that every apparent thing is appearing on. Could there be any appearances without the space that they are appearing in? Ask yourself this, don’t just accept some jumped up guru’s word for it. See and know that I am THAT non dual Absolute, and that there are no others apart from me as THAT. Not two powers, only one essence or power! Can you as the apparent human being be apart from from that Omnipotence when THAT is all there ever is?
Everything in the appearance can be broken down into the basic elements, into sub-atomic particles, then finally into pure energy or basic space. Thinking is nothing but energy and energy is not divided up into the thinker and the thought, it is energy pure and simple. When it is seen that there is no separate ‘thinker’ of a thought, no entity as such, no “me”, So and So who is doing the thinking, thought is then free to flow. Being thought free is not to try to stop the thoughts as they are spontaneously arising, but to simple let them flow freely without having to refer them back to that dead image, “me”, So and So, who then wrongly thinks that he or she is thinking those thoughts.
Thought because it is a vibration can only function dualistically, it can only function in the pairs of opposites, that is its nature. Because it is vibration or movement it vibrates from happy to sad, loving to hating, good to bad, and on and on it goes. Observe your mind throughout the day and directly see that this is what it is doing,(recalling the past and anticipating the future, it is never in the timeless now that is this immediacy) constantly moving and changing from highs to lows etc, and that is why you can never get peace of mind in that sense; as mind itself as it appears and functions is constant movement. Peace is when the mind is not, when the mind is seen through and understood to have no independent nature of its own, seen to be nothing but a movement of energy taking place in awareness. “When no discriminating thoughts arise, the old mind ceases to exist.” When is this going to happen? It is going to happen now which is this immediacy, as there is no other time or place that anything can happen.
The mind is then quite useful for practical purposes, and is seen to be a good servant, and nothing else. The mind then is no longer your master as it was before, when it was seemingly giving you all this strife and psychological suffering, but is now a useful servant. “The mind is a good servant, but it is a terrible master.” Yes, and don’t we all know it!
The past never really happened at all, it only ‘appeared’ to do so, just like the night time dream disappears and is seen to be illusory and unreal on waking up. The dream doesn’t happen while you are awake, it only takes place when you are asleep. You can recall the past or you can ‘imagine’ what might take place in the so called future, but the only reality that the past has got is what you are giving it presently, what you are giving it now. This immediacy is the only moment you can ever live, you can’t live a second in the past or the future. So if you are caught up in the mind stuff of dead thoughts and concepts saying to yourself, what if this happens or what if that so called event happens, you are not really living at all, you are stuck in the head stuff, stuck in time that is unreal and imaginary. This is where the living is, in this immediacy, not in what you hope might happen in some future time. If you are not in this immediacy and are instead fixating on the mental thoughts and concepts that can’t keep pace with the very vitality of this livingness, of this ever-fresh immediacy, then you are missing out on life completely.
The conceptual entity, the person, Mr or Mrs So and So, is a dead image, it is not the real, and so can not keep pace with the ever-fresh presence of the moment. Yesterday’s realisation is not a bit of good, it is now dead and has lost its vitality, so it is useless to try to hold onto and cling to an insight, a realisation, or an understanding, for only in the movement of the livingness can there be the possibility and enabling of ever-fresh and new insights of Truth or Reality to appear.
When does now begin? Doesn’t it begin now, presently? When does now end? Doesn’t it end right now? So as it is ending it is beginning again spontaneously, and this Spanda or throb, this somewhat of a movement is what constitutes this very immediacy that can’t be grasped with any label or concept. So there is no ending or beginning to this immediacy that is the natural state. When does life begin? Does it begin when the child is delivered to the mother after a nine months pregnancy? Does life end when any so called human being is pronounced to be dead or deceased? Of course not, life lives on itself and does not know death.
There is something, no thing that is, that knows the life-force and that is not subject to decay or corruption. There is an unborn, an unmade, an unbecoming that is free of and beyond or prior to, all life and death. This is what needs to be known, not by any entity, object, or thing. This ground of being is not subject to decay or becoming, it is what we might call a cognising-emptiness, an emptiness suffused with awareness or naked non conceptual knowing or Such-ness. Here thought, feeling, knowledge, and imagination are of no value. In this world of Such-ness there is neither self nor other-than-self. This you will never grasp with a concept, but must be seen-known, re-cognised directly; and this is only possible when the mind is totally emptied of the dead past, and when all of the accumulated and acquired knowledge and language of the imagined human condition has been fully abandoned, discarded, cleaned out, relinquished, or put aside so to speak.
Everything remains the same and “as it is”, with things and objects appearing and disappearing, yet you know the truth about these so called appearances, and that in themselves they have no substance or independent nature of their own whatsoever and are like the reflections that appear in the mirror. The reflections that appear in the mirror are apparent, yet non existent. You can see the reflections in the mirror, they are definitely there but if you try to extract any of the reflections from the mirror it quickly becomes apparent that they have no separate independent nature of their own and are nothing but the mirror itself.
“The real does not die, the unreal never lived.
Imagine a big building collapsing, some rooms are in ruins,
But can you speak of the space as ruined or intact?
It is only the structure that suffered and the people who happened to live in it.
Nothing happened to space itself.
Similarly, nothing happens to life when forms break down and names are wiped out.
The goldsmith melts down old jewellery to make new.
Once you know that death happens to the body and not to you, you just watch your body falling off, like a discarded garment.
The real you is timeless and beyond birth and death.
The body will survive as long as it is needed. It is not important that it should live long.”
See the incontrovertible truth and actuality of this and forget about belief all together. Do you believe that you are, or is there a naked knowing that you are, already present there with you, thereby rendering any and all beliefs unnecessary and utterly irrelevant?
“A pinprick of “knowingness” has flashed against the background of my innate “not knowingness.”
In it appear all the universes.”
“All this is tranquil, One without beginning, middle or end, which cannot be said to be existent or
non-existent. Know this and be happy.”
The perfection of what is.
Knowing that ‘you are’, what more needs to be known? Awareness of being is bliss. Keep it simple, this knowledge I am is the charan–amrita, the nectar of immortality, the nectar of The Lord’s Feet. First Person present tense, singular. I am that I am. You cannot negate your being. The Sanskrit term ‘Sat-Chit-Ananda’ denotes this being that you ever are. Sat means being, Chit means ‘knowing’, and Ananda means the bliss of being or the loving to be. The Sat indicating being, is infinite being, not just for a short span of 100 years or so.
These are three aspects of the one awake, aware no thing, and not three different things; and that is this ever-present unqualified immediacy. Immediacy is immediate, there is no time or space needed for its existence, and this immediacy is non dual, it is Absolute. Absolute means absolute where nothing can be added to it, and nothing can be taken away from it.
What is wrong with this immediacy if it is not subjected to the thinking process? It just is, pure and simple, you cannot take hold of it, pin it down, grasp it with the intellect, locate it or limit it to any static point whatsoever. This ever-present unqualified immediacy is in its essence utter freedom and effortless living. Life is free and unafraid. This life that you are is ever fresh, ever new life that lives on itself and is therefore ever increasing, and hence there is no death in this animating life essence. Life does not know death in its spontaneous ever new expression. just as spirit can never know matter; matter itself being nothing but congealed energy or spirit. This water of life is always nothing but water although it may express as waves, ripples, spray, foam, steam or ice it is still only water, it is still only THAT non dual Absolute.
Everything in the appearance of the phenomenal manifestation can be broken down into the basic elements, into sub atomic particles, into pure energy and finally into the basic space itself. This space or emptiness that is the Absolute is not just a dead void or nothingness, it is no thing that can be grasped or explained in words or concepts, yet it is the very base or foundation of every apparent thing or object. It is a great joy to realize that the Fundamental Nature is quality less.
Can something come from nothing? No it cannot, and this is one hundred percent certain. Some thing can not come from no thing, so the so called things that are appearing are really nothing or no thing. Nothing ever happened at any imaginary time, the world that is “appearing” in the light of the consciousness was never created in the first place, it is appearance only shifting and change full. There is no creation, preservation, or destruction, all of that is what we point to in Advaita as Maya or illusion.
There is nothing that was ever created, creation is imagination pure and simple, whatever appears is still basically unborn awareness. Something can not come from nothing or no thing. All of this is nothing but ignorance only, nothing but entertainment. This is what sages mean by ignorance. It does not mean that one is a fool or uneducated, one might have a university degree, but in spite of this acquired knowledge and learning, one is ignoring ones true nature as this boundless empty space of knowing right there where your human head is assumed to be. If you really see your own headlessness right there at zero degrees from yourself, you would directly notice on present evidence, that you have no head at all right there where that actual seeing is happening at zero degrees from yourself so to speak.
You cannot see your own head, eyes, or neck even, from the empty space that you are looking out of on present evidence. You can ‘think’ or imagine that there is a head there at zero degrees and that is what we generally do. Others, our parents, teachers, and society convince us that we do have a head there in this empty space where we truly and ever are; and we never question it, we never have a fresh and new look for ourselves to see that in fact we don’t have any head there at all, it is assumed and inferred without our looking for ourselves.
It would be rather chicken hearted to seemingly live one’s whole life without having the courage to look and see who and what it is that is living you. You are being lived and functioned quite effortlessly and spontaneously by something – no thing really, that is unimaginable, ineffable, unknowable, and inexpressible. What a wonder THIS really is!
Glancing downwards from the empty space where your human head was assumed to be, you will notice a torso or headless body that fades out into nothing at all right there at the point where your neck and shoulders meet. There at this very visible line, this well at the world’s end so to speak, where the physical body fades into the very obvious clarity and emptiness there below the bottom line at the neck and shoulders area. This has always been the case although one may have never noticed it before. It as almost as though some transcendental moth has chewed along the neck line leaving the limitless ground of being below this imaginary line fully exposed and obvious – a limitless clarity and emptiness right there at the very heart or core of your being.
This needs to be explored at leisure by each and every one of us if we are at all earnest about this great matter of authentic Identity – ‘know thyself’. The science of the First Person, present tense, singular – I am That I am. This will draw one to the firm conviction that no one ever did exist before me. The second and third persons of the ‘appearance’ are in fact non existent and insubstantial just like the reflections that are appearing in the mirror. The mirror in this analogy being the primary being – I am. This being that you ever are is the one and only being – pure being, the non dual Absolute beyond being and non being. This you alone must see, and that nobody else can possibly see for you, as the very subject that is being discussed or pointed to here is non duality. If the very ‘fact’ of truth or reality is directly seen and known to be non dual, non duality, then who or what is going to see THIS? No one at all – you are THAT, who or what else could you be?
I am prior to everything and the knower of it. This is the path of wisdom. Anything less than this would imply multiplicity or duality, and this can never be. Hear O Israel, I am the Lord Thy God, there is none other. Not two! Only THAT non dual Absolute.
Duality is a fiction, it never existed in actuality, and that is why all these gradual approaches of the various different religious practises, techniques and processes don’t actually work, and can never work; even after years and years of engaging in meditation, prayer etc one never arrives at the goal of freedom and salvation that one is promised, if one engages in all this stuff. This is so if one has the courage to drop all of one’s concepts and acquired knowledge and simply look at this fresh and new and so utterly free of the dead past of acquired memory and knowledge.
One sees that one was always free and that there is no duality in non duality, there never has been and there never could be, even when one was convinced that he or she was a separate entity or person struggling to attain wholeness. Even then when one was seemingly quite deluded and ignorant of one’s true nature, it was never the case and you were not the ‘person’, that in your ignorance you then took yourself to be. Even then you were THAT non-dual Absolute and duality never existed at any time, and this is what we mean by ignorance, Maya, or illusion.
Recede, recede, recede back into the zero you ever are at zero degrees from where you are truly seeing from. Your security lies in so to speak, and not out on the periphery of the ever-changing phenomena. You are the changeless noumenon upon which the ever changing phenomena are ‘appearing’. Let this dawn on you by allowing your Eye to be the single edgeless eye that it ever is, this Christ Eye or Buddha Eye being single, not two, your whole body will be full of light. The Tatha-gata became the Eye of the universe. (Parinirvana Sutra)
Look back, recede, go back prior to conception in the womb; what was your position and identity prior to the arising of the consciousness? This you must know if you are to be free of this psychological suffering that you are presently engrossed in. Always ‘becoming’ better and improving, becoming more enlightened, more intelligent, ever amassing gaining and accumulating more objects, experiences and possessions with never a moments peace. This does not have to be! Stop, pause, see what you already are without all this nonsense, all this dead weight of the past pressing down on you.
No external agency can assist you in any of this. Nothing from outside so to speak can make you loving or fearful. You already are the sole and only authority there at zero degrees from yourself, you alone are there where you truly are, First person, present tense, singular – I AM. This is the science of the First Person, not the second or third persons plural. This is not science 3, the science of the phenomenal “appearance”, but rather science 1, the science of the Self.
How could you have ‘imagined’ yourself to be just some insignificant limited little spec in the vastness of the universe, when you alone are the very limitless capacity that everything is ‘seeming’ to appear in? Ask yourself these questions and see where it leads you, break this mold of conditioning that has been imposed on you from the age of around three years and onwards by your parents, teachers and society.
Question everything that you have been told since you were a child and this bondage of self must fall away. This bondage of self kills if it is not questioned and seen through, and no one else will do this for you. You have waited for the coming of the messiah and it has all been in vain. There have been many saints, sages, and seers and not one of them have brought about an iota of change in the consciousness. Wars and conflicts continue on unabated and there is nothing right or wrong about this if you see your true nature, your true position which remains unaffected throughout eternity just like the very bright surface of a spotless mirror.
There is no contamination of this mirror-like awareness by any amount of reflections that might appear on it. Come to the firm conviction that, I am That I am, then nothing can move you away from the certainty of that conviction.
What you are looking for is what is looking. What you are seeking is what you already are, so it is the very search itself that is the problem. You are present and aware right here and now as you are reading these words. Pause for a moment, and just notice what is taking in these words there on your side of this screen or page. Aren’t you seeing out of boundless aware emptiness, a single edgeless eye or window right there where you are actually seeing from, on present evidence; which means, without resorting to thought or thinking in any way?
Have a look there for yourself, don’t just take any one’s word for it. What are these written words appearing on, what are they appearing in, so to speak? Isn’t there an awareness of them? If I am aware of these written words, then obviously I am not these words. Similarly this hand that is writing these words, isn’t that appearing in this impersonal awareness as well?
One may say, my hand, my body, my mind, my hat, my car, or my coat. Am I my hand, my body, my mind, my hat, my car, or my coat? Of course not! Isn’t it self-evident that these ‘apparent’ things, right up to and including the entire universe from Brahma to a clump of grass, are appearing in this impersonal awareness? I am not in the body, the body the mind and the world are in me as this impersonal awareness. Everything, literally everything is in awareness, awareness is not in objects, persons or things. This is what this expounding, this discussion, expression, or pointing out is all about; and that is to draw your attention back to this awareness that in fact you have never left or been away from even for the briefest instant.
You see awareness is not an object, it is not a thing, it doesn’t stand out in any way, it is changeless and Omnipresent and it is no thing to the acquired mind of memory – and the mind doesn’t want to know about no thing, this ever present awake, aware no thing that this awareness ever is. The mind finds this boring and immediately wants to move away from THIS into what it is familiar with, which is the mental concept of time – past, present, and future. It doesn’t want to pause, full stop, look back, or contemplate from whence or what it has arisen, and how it came to have this dualistic discursive nature or capacity. There is the inbuilt fear in the mind that if I do pause or stop this incessant thinking and ruminating then that will be the end of me, and it will be too; however if this inquiry is pursued and persisted in earnestly, then there is the joyous life changing discovery that I am still aware and present even if there is no thinking taking place.
Am I awareness in a body, or am I a body in awareness? Not only am I in fact a body in awareness, but all bodies and everything else is in awareness, there is nothing and no one outside of this space of knowing that this awareness is. Is there anything outside of space, if so what would it be in? It would have to be in space wouldn’t it? Aren’t you this space-like awareness?
This being the case the world then depends on me, and not the other way around, as the so called common sense view would indicate. From this self-shining, self-existing, self knowing, ever-fresh, ever-new, non conceptual presence awareness where the actual seeing is taking place from, the common sense view or understanding turns out to be utter nonsense, ignorance, and illusion, or what we call Maya in Advaita, which is the truth of non duality.
Before there can be any God, I have to be there first and foremost. Before any concept of a God or a so called higher power can be brought in I have to be there prior to this! If awareness is no thing at all, a cognizing-emptiness, which we liken unto space, as space-like awareness; then can any limited thing ever touch it, destroy it, or affect it in any way at all?
Isn’t this why it is pointed out by Lord Krishna in the Indian Scripture entitled “The Bhagavad Gita”, that in fact ‘the sword can’t cut it, the fire can’t burn it, the wind can’t dry it, and the water can’t wet it’; simply because it contains all these so called things, they don’t contain it, and they never can contain it as they are utterly insubstantial “appearances” that are seemingly appearing and disappearing in this space of knowing.
The very contents of this space-like awareness are in fact nothing but the awareness itself appearing as other than itself, just like the images that totally cover the reflecting surface of a mirror. The reflections in the mirror have no substance or independent nature of their own and are in fact nothing but the mirror surface itself. Form can be nothing but emptiness, and emptiness can be nothing but form. Form is emptiness and emptiness is form.
Can something come from nothing or no thing, which this non conceptual awareness ever is? The obvious answer is no, something can not come from nothing or or no thing. This being the case nothing ever happened. The world being appearance only has never been created, nothing is ever created and everything as such is this unborn presence awareness. This awareness is unborn, unceasing, and unoriginated, it had no origin at all, it simply is, ‘as it is’, full stop! THIS ever-present unqualified immediacy. Can you negate it? In fact everything, literally everything is unborn, non conceptual awareness.
If this awareness is unborn, can you die, when in very fact you are not unaware at any point whatsoever? Are you unaware right now? Well obviously not! You can’t get away from the directness and simplicity of this actuality of non duality. There is only THAT non dual Absolute. Not two! Not two, now or ever. There never has been two, and this is the very ignorance that is being exposed here – “me”, “I”, and the imagined other. This duality, ‘I’ and other than I is imaginary and illusory, or what we call Maya in Advaita, a social convention necessary for practical functioning but without any substance or independent nature of its own separate and apart from this non dual, non conceptual awareness. This presence awareness is Absolute. Can you add anything to THIS Absolute, this ‘glassy essence’ as Shakespeare referred to it? Can you take anything away from it?
As long as this false identity, this body-mind entity, Mr or Mrs so and So is entertained and taken to be some ‘thing’ real and permanent, and not seen to be false; in other words, not seen through, then your psychological suffering is going to continue endlessly. It was pointed out to me very clearly by Nisargadatta Maharaj, that the person I had all along taken myself to be was ‘the child of a barren woman’. Now a barren woman never had a child in the first place, so whose son or daughter are you, for heaven sake? You are not what you presently take yourself to be, you are not the body or the mind, so find out who and what you truly and ever are. Wouldn’t that be wise or imperative? All other knowledge apart from Self-knowledge is pure ignorance or illusion because it is happening in a dream, which is time. You are then like a dreamer who is trying to change the dream, which is an impossibility, simply because the dream never happened, it only ‘appeared’ to. When you wake up from the night time dream, what happens to the characters that appeared in your dream? They immediately disappear because they were imaginary, just like this present character that you are now taking yourself to be in this waking dream, he or she also is imaginary. Are you prepared to go that far, or to see this for yourself? Unless you are, I suggest that you forget about non duality all together and just carry on with your goal oriented endless seeking.
As long as there is another, there must be fear, bound to be. “Hear O Israel, I am the Lord thy God, there is none other!” Not two. Just see, who did this suffering ever happen to? Well as a matter of fact it happened to “me” you say. And this fellow here is telling you from direct seeing-knowing that there is no “me”, and there never has been a “me”. Where is this “me”, the so called person, and where is the world that he or she appears in when you are in deep sleep? There is nothing there at all in deep sleep, yet awareness is still present and operating there as the breathing and respiration continues on unabated.
Reality has never changed at any imaginary point in time, and it can be said here with total and full conviction that in fact, I am That!
The Great Word or mahavakyas of Hinduism – I am THAT, Thou are THAT – or similarly with the greatest statement from the King James bible – I am That I am. The THAT we are using here for the want of a better word refers to the Supreme Reality, the Noumenon, the unmanifest, the unborn Buddha Mind. All these terms are only concepts, they are not the no thing, the Absolute itself, as it cannot be limited and no word or concept can encompass it; they are only pointers to what can never be negated, and that is this ever-present unqualified immediacy.
I can say this with full and total conviction, now ask yourself can you say this also? If not, why can’t you say and know this truth with full conviction? Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free! It will not set you free unless you know it. If THIS is true why don’t you know it? Give up this timidity, re-cognize your true nature, and roar like a lion. See that you are a loin and not a sheep, the miserable human being that you appear to be over there in your mirror each morning.
You are not over there in the mirror, you are here on this side of the mirror – THIS boundless aware-emptiness that the mirror and everything else is appearing in. Give no attention to what you should do from morning to night. Just pay attention to this; you are not the body-mind. I am beyond time and life. The life of the universe depends on me; I don’t depend on the universe. I am untouched by the five elements. Apparently it seems like I might be rolling in actions, but there is no action for me. As this awake, aware no thing or emptiness here at the very core of my ‘being’, I have never moved an inch or changed in any way at all. Nothing sticks here, and nothing ever will, how can anything stick to boundless space-like awareness or consciousness? So it has no space(volume) and no time(duration) because it is spontaneous. THIS is spanda, a throb, or somewhat of a movement, the very livingness itself, an endless movement without beginning or ending.
An incessant flash of ‘I’- Consciousness, which is the very godliness of you, that is eternal life, you can be aware of it, hear it, sense it, so to say, that is ‘aham spoorthi’. The sparkling of truth devoid of ‘I’ is the greatest austerity, and the one who is aware of his divinity, while in the body, is in a state of bliss beyond description, transcending bondage and liberation. This is here and now. If there is no volume and no duration in this limitless space of knowing can there be a path to it? Is there any path in space? No there is not, there is only THAT Absolute, and this is the beauty, the immediacy, the truth that is non duality, the “what is” that we are pointing to.
Similarly, to remain without thought in the waking state is the greatest worship. You will never get peace of mind, because the mind being time-thought is constantly moving and vibrating in the pairs of opposites – good, bad, happy, sad, pleasant, painful, loving, hating, etc, and there is nothing wrong with that, as that is its nature to move and vibrate. Peace is when the mind is not, and that is the peace that passes understanding. You can’t understand or grasp Nirvana or peace. THIS silence and stillness at the very core of your being is always present, Omnipresent as a matter of fact, but you are ignoring it by constantly fixating on the thinking process, one thought following another thought endlessly like a dog chasing its tail.
The indication is, keep your front door open, your back door open, let thoughts come and go, but don’t serve them tea! Don’t get involved with them! Thought is useful as a tool, you can use it when needed and then let it go, drop it altogether, let thought be free to go where it wants to. That is what it means to be thought free, and there is always going to be thoughts as long as the vital breath is flowing; let the thoughts be free to return to the no thing that they have arisen from, let them go, release them fully, don’t hang on to them trying in vain to change, alter, modify, correct, or improve them.
If you get involved with the thoughts trying to improve or change them, then instead of you using the thoughts, the thoughts are then using you, which is what generally happens and this then causes all the unnecessary psychological suffering that human beings are riddled with. All we are saying here is that it doesn’t have to be that way.
Once you get a glimpse of your true nature stay there for eternity, don’t dwell out on the periphery only, where that limited human being with all its misery and suffering ‘appears’ to be. Without that presence of awareness which we seem to be ignoring, and which is ever-present, one would not even be able to lift a finger. Acknowledge or re-cognize this unquenchable light in oneself, this light of awareness that lights every man or woman who comes into the world. This light of awareness is the very light of life that doesn’t know death. Life is living on life and is thus ever-increasing, there is no death in life as such, this life that is the natural state is everlasting life, the resurrection that is eternal life here and now, ever-fresh, ever-new. I am, is the way, the truth, and the life everlasting.
Life is spontaneous, as it is beginning it is ending, and as it is ending it is beginning again, therefore it never truly begins or ends and so it is timeless and eternal. Eternity is right here and now for there is no beginning or ending in this timeless now moment. A thousand light years has a beginning and an ending but this Omnipresence has no beginning or ending. This unborn awareness has no volume and no duration, so it is timeless and space less, This is it! Ah, This.
At what point did I get this news ‘I am’, and that I am existing as some independent person or entity? I didn’t even start knowing that I was until two or three years after the apparent birth of the body when the words and language were picked up from the parents and adults that were surrounding me at the time. Also once this I am news is there, you want it to remain eternally. There is a natural loving to be, and wanting to continue as such, present in every living being.
There are many persons who have a great attachment to their own individuality. They want first and foremost to remain as an individual and then search, for they are not prepared to lose that individuality. While retaining their identity, they want to find out what is truth. But in this process, you must get rid of this identity itself. If you really find out what you are, you will see that you are not an individual, you are not a person, you are not a body. And people who cling to their body identity are not fit for this knowledge.
The names and forms that appear, their origin is water, but nobody says I’m water, but they say I am the body. The bodies are basically water, and the waters of life are in essence this ocean of awareness prior to consciousness. This glassy essence or Suchness is a cognizing-emptiness, an emptiness suffused with knowing. You are ‘knowing’ right now without having to introduce a conceptual knower or a conceptual known. Just this naked non conceptual knowing is what you always and ever are, not the knower or the known which are only conceptual and not actual.
This is consistent with the utter spontaneity of nature just as it is, in what we refer to in Advaita as ‘the natural state’. The natural state, meaning, as in nature, is one whole totality, undivided, utterly uncontrived with nothing separate, outside, or apart from it that could know itself as some thing, person or entity separate or apart from itself. Nature or non duality is utterly perfect in itself and cannot be improved upon, added to, or taken away from
The Self-realized is intimately cognizant of the fact that nature in its spontaneous functioning has no self or ego whatsoever, no static point, no fixed permanent reference point that it needs to cling to, protect, or defend. Everything in nature is in constant movement and flux, yet nature spontaneously resolves itself. Autumn follows summer, night follows day, the incoming tide follows the outgoing tide without any conflict. Day doesn’t fight with night, and sound doesn’t fight with silence in this natural functioning.
However in the case of the human beings there is ongoing conflict between the different nations, countries, or tribes, all because of the acquired seemingly fixed entity, “me”, So and So. Now, the reality of this imagined person or entity is taken to be solid. fixed, real, substantial, and unchanging, and is very seldom ever looked into, challenged, or questioned. If it was it would be seen to be false or illusory. In this authentic investigation or inquiry it is seen that there is no static or fixed point anywhere in this nature or natural state. No permanence, nothing, no thing with any substance or independent nature of its own whatsoever, no ground to stand on in this empty cognizance, this activity of knowing which is what this awareness ever is.
You cannot negate This awareness, you ‘know’ that you are, you don’t believe that you are! What you are as that awareness you don’t know, simply because as we pointed out, this naked non conceptual awareness that you ever are has no counterpart, no other, no person or entity apart from it that could know it as such. However, it is self-existing, self-knowing, self-shining just ‘as it is’. Where then is the separate entity, the ‘sample’ that you have presently taken yourself to be in THAT non dual essence that we are pointing to, there at zero degrees from where you are truly seeing from? I suggest that when it is looked for it can’t be found, it is seen to be non- existent, like the horns on a hare, water in a mirage, or the child of a barren woman. In other words you have been in bondage to a non-existent phantom!
This is the very truth and actuality of non duality, there is no duality in it, and there never has been. The direct seeing-knowing of this is enlightenment or Self-realization. There being no awakened one; there is only Self-realization. There is no one who is not THAT non dual Absolute, and this is known here for certain; all of my doubts have been destroyed and demolished long ago, however no one can know or see this for anyone else so to speak. This will be no consolation to anyone who might be reading this, as what is being pointed to is not some type of mental concept, or some acquired conceptual garbage from the dead past, that dead image “me”, So and So, that you are always referring everything that is occurring spontaneously back to; THIS that is being pointed to is real and actual beyond any imagining or contrivance by the time-bound mind entity.
Let go of all that nonsense, and realize that you will never find the answer you are seeking in the acquired mind of memory, which is time. No answer in the mind! If this is correct, might it not be wise to stop looking there? You’ve been looking in the mind all of your life, with all of those old tape recordings constantly playing in your head, doing this practice, this particular meditation, and this or that type of technique. Where has it got you, have you found any answer there? Of course not! Here is the key, use it to open your own treasure house, instead of running around pointlessly trying to open the treasure house of others.
There are no others, there is only THAT non dual Absolute, and you already are THAT Absolute, not at some future time after you have purified your mind, but right here and now! There is no mind to purify if you realize the Self. Never mind the mind, there is no mind to control if this is seen, you trust in THAT aware no thing at the very core, the heart of your own being, remaining as you are in this natural state. You are forever! Eternity is right here and now, it is not a thousand or a million years. THIS aware no thing is timeless, unceasing, This ever present unqualified immediacy never begins or ends, it has no volume or duration, no time or space, and this you will never figure out with your mind.
When you say, my mind, what are you actually talking about? Can you find the mind that is seemingly giving you all this trouble? When you take the time to really look for your mind, you can’t find any such thing as a mind existing there, apart from this naked awareness or ‘knowing’ that you are. Doesn’t that then naturally pacify or set the mind at rest, directly seeing that there isn’t any mind there at all, as such, that needs to be controlled, changed, altered, modified, or corrected? Have a good look for yourself and don’t just take my word for it.
You cannot grasp this awareness that is ever-present, with any word, thought, or concept, but you cannot negate it either. What does this tell you? Are you unaware right now? Of course not, you are self-evidently aware and present here and now, not in the past or future. Past, present, and future are imaginary, and time is only a mental concept. What time is there if you are not thinking about it? There is none, so what more could you want? Can you ever stop wanting? Does space want anything? This naked space of knowing can’t be added to or taken away from, aren’t you that ‘space’ of naked non conceptual knowing? Can anyone else answer this question for you, when there is only THAT limitless space of awareness?
The Great Perfection is non conceptual awareness. If from the perfect the perfect be taken, only the perfect remains. There is only my-Self, Consciousness. Is space divided into heaven and hell, up and down, or here and there? Space has no center or circumference, and there is nothing separate or apart from space, this ever-present space of knowing. Space doesn’t stand out, it is like and absence or emptiness, a total abstraction, the Ground of being, upon entering which there is the realization that one has been there throughout Eternity.
Prior to this one hundred and eighty degree turning around and ‘looking’ back to see where you are seeing from, directly noticing what exactly you are seeing out of; the focus has been totally outward going, on objects, things, and the changing sensations that are “appearing” in this space. Now that it is being pointed to one is starting to see the space that the insubstantial things and objects are appearing in. This is what ignorance is, taking the “appearance” to be reality. Nirvana, Noumenon, or the unmanifest is the reality, whereas phenomena, appearance, or manifestation is illusion, or what we call Maya in Advaita Vedanta.
There is nothing permanent in this appearance, this ever-changing world of objects, persons, and things and no matter how much you love them, cling to them, cherish them and want to keep them and hold on to them, they are going to change, move away from you, die and disappear all together. If you don’t realize your true nature, this space-like awareness-emptiness, and ignoring your true nature and taking this Maya or appearance to be reality, isn’t that going to inevitably create suffering for you when these things, objects, and persons disappear in the natural course of events?
Isn’t that the first noble truth that the Buddha proclaimed, the truth of suffering? The cause of suffering is clinging or attachment, and so the way out of suffering is to let go, to let be, to let things resolve spontaneously as they do in nature. All this is about is suffering and the ending of suffering, and what is being pointed out here is that this psychological suffering is unnecessary, it doesn’t have to be there if it is looked into and thoroughly investigated.
The false can’t stand up to the investigation. If something is ‘seen’ to be false then it drops away by itself, there is then no need to kill it, sublimate it, purify it, get rid of it, change, alter, modify or correct it in any way whatsoever. Doing any of these things only makes it seem real. You are then just like a dreamer trying to change the dream, which is absurd, as the dream or Maya is utterly illusory, unreal, and insubstantial. Whatever appears to happen in the dream, never truly ever happened in actuality. Nothing ever happened, as this ever-fresh presence awareness is untouched, unaffected. Everything that seemed to happen in the dream, never happened at all and was only imaginary, nothing but imagination taking place in the sleep state.
Dreams don’t happen in the waking state, they only happen when you are asleep, and even the so called ‘person’ who imagines that he is now in the waking state after having woken up from the sleep state, is also another dream character appearing in this ever fresh, ever new, immediacy of timeless, non conceptual, all-knowing awareness. That is why nothing ever happened. Reality, non duality is ‘as it is’ unchanged and utterly unaffected. Reality by its very definition is THAT which ‘does not’ change, and what doesn’t change is this ever present unqualified immediacy, THIS non dual Absolute, just this, nothing else.
You see once the ‘concept’ of being a separate person or entity takes hold around the age of two to three years, you are then immediately in the trap of duality, Maya, or illusion – I, and other than I. This is the so called original sin, the fall from grace that the Scriptures refer to, however this trap is no trap at all, it is only an imaginary trap, once it is seen through.Read More »
There is nowhere to go and nothing to do. Nothing ever happened. If something did happen then that would mean that reality has changed, and that is quite impossible simply because reality, or non duality, by its very nature, is that which does not change. Reality “as it is”, this ever fresh presence awareness, has not changed nor can it ever change – this is it! Things by their very nature perish, they are utterly insubstantial like the water that appears in a mirage; however the no thing that is awareness-emptiness and that the so called things are appearing on or in, does not change and is the only constant.
Are you unaware right now? Well quite obviously you are aware, otherwise there would be no capacity to read or hear these words. You could not even lift a finger without that awareness being present. What that awareness is you don’t know, but that it is, you certainly do know, as you cannot negate it. You cannot say ‘I am not’, because it would be this impersonal presence awareness that is allowing those words, which are thoughts – “I am not”, to express through the mind.
Awareness expresses through the mind, which is time, acquired around the age of two and a half years with the acquisition of language picked up from the parents, as the primary thought – “I am” – little Julie or James or whoever it might be. Now that thought “I am” is not the reality, it is only a mental concept. The person So and So is simply a concept, not the real or actual. A concept is a construct, something made up, it is not the reality. The person is not the reality, it is only a concept, an image, or a construct. Do you see the implications of this discovery?
If this was truly seen and understood then that would be enough to free you instantly from all psychological suffering, from birth and death and any and all future becoming. Future and past are time and this presence awareness is timeless and Omnipresent, so first and foremost see that right here and now you are not unaware. Start from the fact that right here and now you are present and aware, and that what you are seeking in some imaginary future time, you already are. The seeking is because of ignorance of what you always and ever are. There is some type of uninvestigated lack there, which is why the seeking is continuing. If you start from being a separate entity or person with destiny and free will, who is trying to get to non duality from duality, then you are crying for the moon, and it will never happen, no matter how many sat sangs you attend, or how many gurus you might consult.
You have never come or gone anywhere, nor have you ever done a single thing. Everything has seemingly happened quite spontaneously without the input of any imaginary separate entity. A dream character doesn’t have any reality or substance of its own apart from the dream that occurs when one is asleep, and which vanishes completely when one awakens from sleep. Is there any reality whatsoever to the happenings that seem to occur in the night time dream? Of course not, it was just an idle dream that occurred in sleep! You were lying in a warm bed and no actual words were coming out of your mouth, and you never moved off the bed; yet in the dream you may have been out in the country somewhere, driving in a car or talking with so called other persons and individuals; however none of those events ever took place in reality or actuality, they were only imaginary events that took place in the dream when you were asleep.
This is also the case when you are awake, then there is this other dream character that you call you, Mr or Mrs So and So, so many years of age, with such and such features or characteristics etc, that you are now presently taking to be your identity. Whereas in fact, that person that you are now taking yourself to be is no more substantial or real than the characters that were appearing in your night time dream; simply because the “person” that you now appear to be, and who appears over there in your mirror every morning, has a limited shelf life, is time-bound and soon to disappear from the stage of history. This being the case, then what is your true nature, or natural state? What was your position prior to conception in the mothers womb? What color were you, how big were you, where were you located, which particular city were you living in, and what concept did you have about yourself, prior to conception?
How did you come to be? Who are you? Who am I? How did this happen without your permission? Are you responsible for, and did you have any say in the making or seeming creation of the body that you presently call ‘your body’? Did you create this body, or did it arise spontaneously and unknowingly? Do you in actuality choose anything at all, or does everything just happen by itself without any cause, due to this ever-present, non conceptual, awareness-emptiness? Who is the choice maker, is it ‘you’, the imagined separate entity – So and So? What is your identity? Get that right before you concern yourself unnecessarily with so called others. Are there really any others at all? “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added unto you.” Seek ye first these things, and even they shall be taken away.
This is what needs to be seen and investigated. In this sense there is no one who can do anything for you, nor is there anyone who can see this that is being referred to for you; contrary to what is being said by many new age teachers and gurus. The essence of what we are pointing to is Advaita or non duality. Advaita in Hinduism means “not two”, only THAT – One without a second!
If there is only THAT, which I am telling you from direct knowing here, then who is the guru and who is the disciple? Quite obviously, when you drop all of your acquired knowledge, words, and concepts, even a child can see that there are no things there at all, no teacher or teachings whatsoever, right there in that space-like awareness where you truly and ever are at zero degrees from yourself.
Now just see for yourself, exhale your breath and pause your thought for a brief moment. Let your thoughts ride out on the outgoing breath. With your thought exhaled and paused just briefly, where does that leave you? Doesn’t it leave you here and now aware and present as you’ve always and ever been? Where is the duality in THAT naked non conceptual knowing? There is nothing there at all, just this already awake, aware no thing – a limitless, boundless, emptiness suffused with awareness or knowing. Vast emptiness – nothing sacred. No snake in this rope of ordinary, everyday awareness. Are you unaware right now? See for yourself that the bottom line is, that you are present and aware without any choice or effort on your part.
Non duality is not a religion, concept, or philosophy, but rather the very actuality – what is. What did you have to do to “be” aware? Nothing at all I suggest. This quite ordinary, everyday awareness which you have been ignoring up until this reminding or clear pointing out, is the very reality or great enlightenment that you have been seeking elsewhere in other ‘persons’, things and events. Once you start looking along the lines of non duality, then your progress will be very swift indeed. If you start from the ‘fact’ that you are that non dual Absolute, then the battle is already won. However if you start from duality and the illusion of being a separate, independent ‘person’ or entity who has destiny(time) and free will (the false idea that you are the doer of your actions), trying then to get to this actuality of non duality from there, from duality, it will never happen, and you will never get there. See this for yourself, don’t take any body’s word for it, because that will be pure hearsay and belief without authentic knowing.
This is the very ignorance I am pointing out here. You don’t really know what you are, you have severely underestimated your true nature or condition, and placed all these unnecessary limitations on yourself – for example – “After all, I am only human!” Are you really? Have you ever truly looked into this for yourself? This is inquiry, not some conceptual stories written in a book. You don’t seem to know “you are”, not just for ninety years or so, but infinitely and eternally. You are ignoring this awareness and looking outwards, fixating on the gross objects and sensations – food, sex, sport, music, art and culture etc. All this could not be there without the aware space or limitless capacity that it is taking place in.
This awareness of being is bliss, which is total happiness, wholeness, fully complete in itself and self-existing, without anyone or anything having created it at any imaginary time. Just see for yourself that there is no thinker of a thought as such. Thinking is happening spontaneously, just like the seeing, hearing, tasting, touching and all of the other natural functioning. See that the thinker is the thought, and that the observer is the observed, and that there is no real division between them at all, and that they in fact cancel each other out. The thinker and the thought are both conceptual, and not actual. What is actual or real is the thinking, the seeing, etc.
There is no seer and nothing seen, just the seeing itself. This seeing which is taking place presently, is not split up into a seer (subject, “me”) and the seen (the object) over there. When you say – “I see the table over there.” What have you done? You have created a pseudo subject here (me) and a pseudo object (table) over there, whereas in fact everything is contained and undivided in this naked seeing. There is no seer and no seen, just the seeing. There is no thinker, and no thought, just the thinking.
This is the key to the ending of psychological suffering, for after all, who did suffering ever happen to? Well obviously it happened to “me”, you say; but when it is earnestly looked into it can be seen that this “me” is a total fiction, a phantom, that never truly existed in the first place, it is the ‘child of a barren woman’ without any substance or independent nature of its own. Suffering only ever happened to a “me”, and this fellow is telling you that there is no me, and that the “me” is a total fiction, it doesn’t exist, and that it is found to be non existent, when it is fully investigated. If this is so, what happens to your suffering then? It has to disappear and drop away by itself, because if there is no real cause(“me”) then how can there be an effect(suffering)? “Me” and suffering go together. No ‘me’, no suffering. No “me”, no problem period!
Yes, it still “appears” to be there. The reflections still appear to be in the mirror, as you can see them there, but when you actually go up to the mirror and try to pull one of the reflections out of the mirror, all you can grasp is the reflecting surface of the mirror itself. Even though the reflections are definitely in the mirror and can be seen, they are not real and are nothing but the mirror itself. The sky still appears to be blue and it will always appear to be blue, however it is without any color at all, just like space has no color, shape or form of its own, so to speak.
Thought or thinking is useful and necessary for everyday living and functioning and it is not an enemy, if it is understood. On the other hand if thought is not understood and is taken to be the be all, and the end all, and the final authority and arbiter of everything that happens, then it becomes self destructive, and the cause of endless fear and psychological suffering. Just see – who thinks they are thinking these thoughts? Isn’t it just ego “me”? All of your problems then are just problems of this separate entity. What is thought? Isn’t it simply a vibration or a movement of energy at the subtle or gross level, a tiny movement or ripple of energy taking place in Omnipotence, all power or all energy, which is limitless power or intelligence? Do you think energy can think? It can’t, as it is not divided, thinking is happening spontaneously, so the so called ‘thinker’ and the ‘thought’ are only conceptual and not actual, it is all energy expressing as nature or the natural state.
Nothing is good or bad, but thinking makes it so. The only problem you could ever have then is thinking, when it is not understood. Thought is time, and time is only a mental concept; it is therefore limited and cannot grasp, know, comprehend, or understand the timeless, unborn, non conceptual awareness or limitless capacity that it is appearing on. Because thought is so closely aligned with this limitless intelligence, this beginning less, endless activity of knowing, which is what awareness is; it has come to think that it is this the non dual. non conceptual awareness itself. However if that awareness were not present first and foremost you would not be able to lift a finger, have a single thought, or do a single thing.
Therefore wouldn’t it be wise to give credit where it really belongs, and that is to this animating life essence of awareness-consciousness, and not to the person who you mistakenly ‘think’ is separate, apart, and independent of this awareness? Awareness-emptiness is unceasing, timeless, limitless, the base and foundation of every ‘apparent’ thing, and the so called ‘contents’ of awareness are nothing but the awareness itself, and you are THAT! I am THAT! All this is THAT!Read More »
Happiness is innate in the so called human being. Happiness is not something new to be acquired, if it was, then there is a good chance that you might loose it again. Happiness is this very ‘fact’ of your own being right here and now. This loving to be which is in every living thing is an uncaused joy, and the very nature of life itself in which there is no death whatsoever. Death is something we have invented, and life as it is given – “as it is”, in nature or the natural state, does not know death as it lives on itself and is thus ever increasing.
This natural happiness of conscious being is the only happiness worth the name. Nothing can be added to this everlasting life essence, and nothing can be taken away from it. Happiness that has a cause is in fact utter misery. You are always and ever happy or blissful but you don’t know it, or are somehow forgetful of ‘your glassy essence’, as Shakespeare puts it in his play – ignorant of what he is most assured – his glassy essence – his transparency, namely this awake, aware emptiness at the very core of your being. The Great Perfection of Dzogchen in Buddhism is, ‘non conceptual awareness’. This self-existing, self-shining, ever fresh and new presence of non conceptual awareness is what you always and ever are, however you are somehow ignoring it or taking it for granted, so to speak.
This happiness that you already are is not in your family, in your friends, in your job, in your country, in your wealth and fame, not in your religion, or in anything else for that matter. This happiness is in your own Self, in your own heart essence, in the very core of your being, but because you have been blinded by illusion, or what we call Maya or appearance, you have seemingly lost hold of your Self or pure being and are hence looking for happiness outwardly in persons, things, and objects. Samsara(the world of objects) is sorrow. Men want absolute and permanent happiness. This does not lie in objects but in the Absolute. It is Peace free from objects. It is a neutral state.
Happiness is your true nature when you come back to yourself as this presence awareness. Self-realization is Bliss. Bliss is not something to be acquired. You are always Bliss…….get rid of your ignorance which makes you think that you are other than Bliss. Happiness is inherent and not due to external causes. One must realize Oneself in order to open the store of unalloyed happiness.
What is it that is seemingly preventing us from realizing this innate happiness that is already present within us? Isn’t the culprit time which we have invented for practical purposes? Time is just a mental concept, purely and simply. Is there any time apart from thinking that there is? What time is there if you don’t think about it, and what is wrong with right now unless you think about it? There is nothing at all lacking in this awake, aware no thing that is this presence of awareness. There is nothing wrong any more. There is nothing good or bad, but thinking makes it so.
This awareness that you are is fresh and new every instant, time has no effect on it. If you see everything as fresh and new, ‘as it is’, in the spontaneity of the moment, then that is what needs to happen. In this presence is the fullness of life, total. whole and complete, undivided; so what is it that seems to be obscuring this life essence? Isn’t it “me”, the so called separate entity that I am presently taking myself to be? If this ‘me’ is fully investigated it is found to be a non existent phantom, like the horns on a hare, or like the water in a mirage. No “me”, no problem, it is as simple as that when you really take the time to look into it.
Once the me is directly seen to be false on investigation, even then life continues on just like it did before and problems will continue to arise just as they did before, however they loose the sting that they had prior to seeing this, and they resolve themselves much easier and simpler than was previously the case. Whenever a problem arises one then spontaneously pauses and there is a looking to see who it is that has the problem? Isn’t the answer that it is “me”, So and So who has the problem? One then notices that there is no me there at zero degrees from where you actually are, to have any problem. The so called problem then resolves itself spontaneously in due course, but not in the way that the person or entity wanted it to be resolved.
There is then no way that the psychological suffering and problems can remain there, they must and will fall away quite spontaneously and effortlessly, when they are looked at in the clear and obvious light of this impersonal awareness that they are appearing in and on. Psychological suffering is conceptual and not real or actual, when you have the courage to stop or pause your chattering time-bound mind, pause the thinking process for just an instant and have a real good look and SEE for yourself – no one else is going to see this for you – that there is no ‘me’ there at all, that this is supposed to be happening to. Who did suffering and problems ever happen to? Well quite obviously they happened to me. This unexamined “me” or ‘person’ implies separation or duality – me and other than me. Is there any separation or division – me and not me in space? Can something come from nothing – THIS aware no thing that awareness ever is? The suffering is caused by the conceptual stories you are telling yourself in your head, in your time-bound mind – poor me, etc, etc! These are all just mental concepts that you are telling yourself. If you look for your so called mind you can’t find anything there at all that you could call mind apart from this ever-present, naked, unadorned, non conceptual awareness.
Is there any such thing as mind apart from the thinking process, and thinking at the subtle level is simply a vibration or movement of energy. Do you think that energy can think? It can’t, it is simply pure energy – Omnipotence – all power – all energy, limitless abstract intelligence or capacity or what we might call Noumenon. There is no thinker of a thought. Thinking, like seeing, hearing, tasting and touching is happening spontaneously and is undivided, whole and complete just as it is. The thought ‘I think’ cannot think, it is simply a translation or a vibration of energy taking place in awareness. The thought ‘I hear’ cannot hear, hearing is happening spontaneously before the thought ‘I hear’ even arises.
Thinking does not and cannot divide anything. Thinking does not divide space. This ever present space-like awareness is what everything is taking place in, and nothing has ever touched it or affected it in any way. Nothing could happen apart from this Base of awareness-emptiness. Awareness is no thing to the mind. When you reverse the arrow of your attention and look steadily within you see, suddenly and easily and to perfection that you are Empty, Formless, Void – an aware nothing or no thing that contains everything in a perfect unity free of any and all separation.
When thought is paused or stops briefly by itself, you haven’t disappeared or ceased to exist, you are still present and aware. There is no mind at all when you look for it or try to find it. When thinking stops there is just pure mind or awareness. When you pause a thought just briefly, there in that pause you are immediately beyond the mind, it is as simple and easy as that. So called religious people, monks and those who practise meditation spend years and years trying to go beyond the mind, and yet you are already beyond the mind as soon as you full stop with the thinking and endlessly trying to work things out in the mind; when you simply pause a thought, right there and then you are beyond the mind.
You are always and ever beyond the mind. Don’t you say my mind, my coat, my car, etc. Are you the mind, the coat or the car? Of course not! Who is the owner of the coat, the car, and the mind, isn’t it you the pure, ever-fresh, ever-new, impersonal awareness? See for yourself, investigate for yourself and realize the illusory nature of this apparent separate entity – ‘me’, So and So. See for yourself, no one else can see this for you, and that is the very ‘fact’ that the person is not the Real or the actual, the unchanging essence. You are the sole authority there where you are at zero degrees from where you are seeing. See just where you are seeing from – the actual seeing is taking place from boundless clarity and emptiness – there is not even a speck of dust there in this boundless Space and clarity where your are truly ‘seeing’ from. Don’t take my word for it, see for yourself, you are the authority there where you truly and ever are.
The so called person or persona is a mask seemingly covering and obscuring your deathless essence. Also this sentience or consciousness that has seemingly come out of nothing, is really something new to us in a way, is it not? Even though the so called person may be 50, 80, or even 100 years old, what shape, form or color was that person prior to its conception in the mother’s womb; and how long was it in this nothing before it suddenly appeared as a fully formed infant? Also what shape, form or memory will be retained by the ‘person’ when the body breaks down in the natural aging process, and the basic elements that constitute the body are returned to nature through the cremation or burial of the worn out body at what we commonly call death?
There will be nothing left at all, which is actually the case right now, even though one may ‘appear’ to be a person, so many years of age, fair, dark, tall or short etc. Can something come from nothing? No it can’t, even if it appears to be something, it is still nothing. Form is nothing but emptiness, and emptiness is nothing but form. Everything is resolved in this unborn awareness emptiness. Awareness is nothing or no thing, an empty cognizance or naked ‘knowing’, it is not an object or any ‘thing’ at all, yet you cannot negate it. You are not unaware, but what that awareness is, you as the entity don’t know, and will never know, you cannot grasp THIS with a concept. The result of all of your arguments, as Nisargadatta Maharaj clearly pointed out to me – “is that you have tried to grasp this with a concept, and you have failed, and you are bound to fail!”
This ever-present unqualified immediacy of awareness is no thing to the mind, and the mind does not want to know about no thing – it does not want to be nothing you see, as there is nothing that the mind can do with it. The mind is time and THIS ever present awareness is timeless, birth less, deathless, body less, mindless, and space less. What more do you want, what more can you want? Can you ever stop wanting? Full stop! right here and now! Where does that leave you? It leaves you here and now present and aware as you have always and ever been. See this for yourself and relax back into this uncontrived singularity, simply be as you are in the natural state.
This that is being pointed to is perfect, whole, and complete and nothing can or need be added to it or taken away from it. Isn’t there a naked knowing there with you right now? This knowing which implies intelligence is an endless movement without beginning or ending which is taking place presently. It is not what was known or what will be known, it is this activity of knowing that is happening presently – Omnipresence or all presence, as it is timeless – beginning now it is also ending now, and as it is ending it is beginning again, so it is unceasing, a throb or vibration(which in Kashmir Shaivism(a non dual teaching) is called spanda or divine vibration) somewhat of a movement, changeless, ever-fresh and new. This you will never grasp with your mind or with a concept.
So, quite obviously you will never find any answer in the mind which is time. There is only one way out of the mind, and that is to stop looking there. You have worked a lot of things out in the mind but you have never worked this out – this mystery of your own being. How did you come to be, this apparent ‘person’ that you appear to be? No thing(awareness) ever happened. You have simply been duped by illusion or what we call Maya in Advaita Vedanta – the truth or very actuality of non duality.
Of course Reality or what we call THAT, for the want of a better word, in the great word or statement of Hinduism – ‘I am That’, is neither dual nor non dual as no words or concepts apply to THAT, or can encompass it. THIS is a non experiencing state, there are no experiences good or bad in this – just this – pure experiencing – knowing – being – living – nothing else – not two – non dual – nothing other than THIS. Got it? Who? There is no one to get it, you are THAT! When you full stop looking in the mind, when you pause a thought, or give up, even temporarily this compulsive indulgence in endless thinking, this conceptual binge that one seems to be obsessively engaging in through habit energy; where does that leave you? Doesn’t it leave you present and aware as you have always and ever been?
Begin to notice this awareness instead of ignoring it and indulging in mental concepts, be warm towards this awareness and it will reveal itself to you and give you all the answers you will ever need, better answers than any jumped up guru will ever have. No one ever lived or died, nothing ever happened, reality is that which never changes. Would this be acceptable? Who to? This is not a matter of acceptance or rejection, this is a matter of “what is” – unaltered, unmodified, uncorrected. This is it – ah THIS.Read More »
Can you cut space, can you divide it up into higher and lower, can you screw it up, scrunch it up, wet it, dry it, blow it up, or affect it in any basic way? Of course not, space is not a thing or an object that could be destroyed or perish, whereas the discreet things and objects that are appearing in the space are constantly and consistently changing, appearing and disappearing, including the so called persons. Space has no limits, centre, or circumference and there is nothing that could exist outside of space. If so, then what would it be in? Wouldn’t it be in space?
Things perish, they are totally illusory and impermanent; not so the space they are appearing in. The contents of space are constantly changing, however the space itself is the only constant and remains unchanged and unaffected. If you happen to be sitting in a room at present, how did the space get inside that room? Inside or outside there is no distinction, it is space only. See this, know and acknowledge this space of knowing, this naked space of all-knowing awareness that you always and ever are.
Space as we generally conceive of it is dead and insentient, nothing at all, just an empty void or nothingness; however this awareness that is ever-present is more subtle than the space, it contains the insentient space, hence it is pointed to as space-like awareness, or naked non conceptual knowing. Are you unaware right now? Well obviously and self-evidently you would have to answer – No, I am not unaware! So if you are not unaware, then you must be aware.
An awake, aware, nothing or no thing – an aware emptiness or a cognizing emptiness, this is what you truly and ever are. This essence that you ever are is body less, mindless, birth less, deathless, timeless and space less. This can be demonstrated by a simple experiment. Going by ‘present evidence’ here and now with eyes closed, and without resorting to any thinking whatsoever, notice whether you are confined in any type of box, or cage of concepts. Do you, on present evidence with eyes closed, have any boundaries, size, shape, form or color, or are you in fact limitless and without any boundaries, not confined or imprisoned in anything at all, at large, unlimited, and yet, you are still aware or knowing?
Notice that various sounds, sensations, itches, thoughts and impressions are ceaselessly arising and endlessly flowing in this boundless, aware, no thing that you always and ever are. This limitless capacity or no thing that you already are, is an awake, aware, no thing, it is not a total vacuum or a dead void. You are certainly not unaware, you ‘know’ that you are. You cannot negate your being-awareness, and ‘you’ as the so called person or entity are not choosing to be aware, you are obviously not making any effort to be aware.
This awareness that you are is choice less, effortless awareness – This ever-present, unqualified, immediacy is utter silence and stillness there at the very core of your being, out of which the sounds and movements spontaneously emanate without cause or stint. Awareness is not personal, it is not your awareness or my awareness. The person is not the real. See THIS for heaven’s sake! Awareness is self-existing, self-shining, ever-fresh, ever-new, spontaneous and unceasing, therefore it has no duration, no time, no volume – THIS is it – just THIS, nothing else, nothing other than this quite ordinary everyday awareness, nothing special, and most importantly, nothing sacred – only THAT non dual essence of naked awareness.
This is why nothing ever happened. Awareness, or no thing ever happened, how could it, as that would imply ‘time’, and this very immediacy of awareness is timeless and never begins or ends. Reality cannot change, if it is reality or non duality. The world was never created in the first place, as all there ever is, is this ever-present unborn awareness. That is what we point to in Advaita, or the very actuality of non duality, when we say that the phenomenal world is Maya, meaning total illusion or appearance only. Can something come from nothing? No, of course not, so whatever ‘appears’ to be there is still nothing – no thing – everything including the appearance and whatever appears to happen in it, is unborn.
There is no static point, no fixed point anywhere in space, so there is no time, duration, or volume whatsoever in this space-like awareness or naked knowing. There is no path, no destination that you have to reach in this ever-present basic space of awareness. Is there a path in space? If so, then it is an imaginary path at best. There is no path in space – THIS actuality of space-like awareness is a pathless land so to speak, and there ‘is’ no path in this. See, directly for yourself. that there is no path to truth or reality – THIS is it, ever-present, Omnipresent.
This therefore being the undeniable ‘fact’ of your own ever present being, why do you continue to believe that you are on some type of spiritual path? Isn’t this type of belief, or any belief for that matter, an illusion and a form of self-deception? Paths lead away from truth or actuality, they lead to unreality or illusion. See that there is no path to truth, and that it is not by going that you will reach this unbecome, unmade, uncontrived, immutable, deathless essence. Whatever direction you go in, in the mind – up, down, north, south, east, or west, will always be in the mind, which is acquired after the age of 2 years, and which is time.
You must see that you cannot get to the timeless – THIS ever-present unqualified immediacy of timeless unborn awareness, from time – “me”, Mr or Mrs So and So. You cannot get to non duality – Reality, Noumenon, or “what is”, from duality, “me” and the so called other. Relationship is dualism, and there is no relationship in non duality, or what we call THAT, for the want of a better word. All of your problems then are problems of relationship – relative to – relative to what? – to this dead image, So and So, that I am constantly referring everything back to. And this so called ‘person’ that I ‘think’ I am, and that I am taking myself to be, is a total fiction, a phantom, and the child of a barren woman so to speak. So I am referring everything back to this dead image that I have acquired about myself – all the events and experiences that have happened to me after the age of 2 years old, have been added to that original ‘I’ thought that occurs when the reasoning capacity arises in the very young child around 2 to 3 years old. Prior to that so called happening of the reasoning mind coming over the small child, engendered by the parents, teachers and society, and the learning of the language picked up from the parents and others, the small child is living quite effortlessly and spontaneously from the natural state.
Once the ‘I’ thought arises in the child, then there is other than I. This sense of separation is then reinforced day in and day out until this I or me takes on a solidity or substantially that it doesn’t really have. It seems to materialize into this rather solid ego or self-center called “me”, So and So. No wonder then that there is psychological suffering in abundance, once this imagined entity “me” is taken to be real and actual and what I truly am. There is then the effort to make this “me” whole and complete again, to improve it, add to it, heal it, alter it, modify it, correct it, sublimate it, kill it, or sweep it under the carpet. All of these efforts will lead to failure, and there is no need to do any of this, once it is seen that this so called ego is a fiction, it never existed in the first place and is utterly false. There is then no need to get rid of it, kill it or improve it, if is seen through and known to be just a concept, and nothing more than a concept useful for practical purposes only. How are you going to ‘become’ whole again, when you were never separate in the first place?
When this so called person or persona – “me”, is fully looked into it is found to be non existent, a phantom really, without any substance or independent nature of its own apart from this ever-present immediacy of naked awareness. So in point of fact, you have been in bondage to a phantom, this imagined separate entity So and So. When this is truly seen, you might even burst out laughing at the absurdity of this Maya or illusion, this fantastic display that seems so convincing, and that is always appearing in this glassy essence or natural state. In the great statement(mahavakya) or word of Hinduism – I am THAT! The THAT that is being pointed to is the non dual Absolute. Absolute means Absolute – nothing other, only THAT, not two, now or at any other imaginary time.
Time does not exist, there is no such thing as time. Time is only a mental concept, and a concept is a construct, something that is made up or invented for practical purposes. This is the very crux of what we are driving at here, grasp this actuality and half the battle is won. Miss this point, and you will continue on forever, wishing and hoping that at some future time the penny is going to drop and everything will become(becoming implies time) clear to you and you will be enlightened. Hope and fear are both the result, the outcome if you will, of the false belief in time.
There is no you there who could be enlightened, and there is no future time that it could happen in. THIS is it right here and now – I am, and what’s wrong with right now unless you think about it? There is nothing at all wrong with this aware timeless presence right here and now. The more you talk and think about it the further astray you wander from the truth. Stop talking and thinking and there is nothing that you will not be able to understand. Full stop, right here and now! Stop thinking, pause a thought briefly – you are still aware there in that pause, you have not disappeared without a thought. Notice the subtlety and significance of this fact.
That’s it, it is as simple as THAT. There is nothing simpler than One, or what we call for the want of a better word ‘THAT’, and it is not even One, as no label or concept will ever fit THIS immediacy that is ever-present. THIS is timeless essence beyond being or non-being, so don’t waste time in doubts and arguments that have nothing to do with THIS. One thing, all things move among and intermingle without distinction. To live in this realization is to be without anxiety about non perfection. To live in this faith is the road to non duality, because the non dual is one with the trusting mind.
So trust in THIS and not your own efforts, see that everything is happening spontaneously and that you are not the doer of your actions, and that in fact, you have never done a single thing in your entire life, and that it is this immediacy of naked awareness that is allowing everything to seemingly happen. In reality nothing ever happened. THIS immediacy is the unmoved mover, the changeless essence at the very core or heart of your being, and you are THAT, and not what you only ‘appear’ to be as that limited human being who appears in your mirror every morning.
The so called person or ‘persona”, “me”, So and So is a mask, and it is veiling your bright, shiny, charming original ‘face’ which is Space; the face you had before your parents were born is this space right there where your alleged human face is assumed to be. Notice that there where you are actually seeing from, where the seeing is truly happening or taking place from, that the very first thing that you are seeing is space, boundless empty space with objects a little further out appearing in this space. You are in fact looking out of a single, boundless, edgeless eye so to speak, and not out of ‘two’ little peepholes in a type of meatball that we call a head. In fact there where the seeing is happening there is no head or neck or physical eyes whatsoever, but only this basis space of knowing or awareness. In point of fact you have no head, you have never had any head there at all in that actual SPACE of knowing where you truly and ever are.
Has any of this ever occurred to you? When this is noticed or pointed out for the very first time, which is now and ever now, although ‘now’ implies time and THIS that you are is timeless. When that naked nothingness or aware no thing is seen into, and one directly sees that there, at zero degrees from where I am actually seeing, and where I truly am, there is in fact no head to speak of, and so I have had that troublesome top knot severed from my shoulders so to speak, and am now headless, utterly free and limitless as this basic space of phenomena – this space-like awareness.
When that is seen, and you can’t help but see this when it is pointed out, one might then exclaim – “Oh, that’s interesting, I now see that I have no head there in this space where I truly am and where I am actually seeing from.” Interesting!??? For Christ sake, if you had really and truly seen this that is presently being pointed to, it would have been really and truly life changing. However, the old familiar habits seem to reassert themselves automatically unless this original authentic seeing or insight is persisted in.
It is quite easy to see THIS now that it has been pointed out and brought to the very forefront of awareness, instead of being fully ignored, which is generally the case. One’s wake fullness or awareness is generally very, very, tenuous at best, and only present to the degree that the status quo or social convention dictates. One is hardly ever aware in that sense, and is usually away with the pixies in the dead past or the imagined future, caught up in the time-bound mind of acquired memory and mental concepts, lost in thought.
The real test of this seeing-knowing is to go on seeing THIS no thing – two way looking – seeing in and out simultaneously at all times in your daily life and at any time you need to – THIS is always available, timelessly Omnipresent. To continue seeing THIS at all so called times, and to live and function effortlessly and fully from this ‘glassy essence’, this emptiness-fullness at the very core of your being. That is what needs to be persisted in until you do not even have to remind yourself that – I am THAT, non dual Absolute and not what I appear to be as that perishable human being or reflection that appears in my mirror every morning, but rather I see and know directly that I am on this side of the mirror, and that I am the mirror-like, self-shining awareness that contains the mirror and every other apparent thing as well.
The reflections in fact are nothing but the mirror itself, and are not separate or apart from the mirror. The mirror is not concerned in the least with any of the reflections that are appearing in it. The reflections that are appearing in the mirror have no reality of their own and are basically nothing but the mirror surface itself. The reflections still appear in the mirror but the mirror is untouched, uncontaminated, utterly unaffected by any of the reflections that are appearing in it. Nothing ever happened to the mirror just as the television screen is not changed or affected by any of the scenes of war, famine, flood, love, hate and destruction that are projected or portrayed on the screen.
The mirror or screen analogy is limited in the sense that the mirror needs something outside of it which it can reflect, however this ever-present unborn awareness-consciousness has nothing outside or inside of it. This cognizing emptiness – Rigpa(in Dzogchen) – emptiness suffused with awareness, is the Base or foundation of every ‘apparent’ thing. Form is emptiness and emptiness is form. There is only THAT non dual Absolute, not two, now or ever, no duality in non duality. THIS is the very home so to speak of non duality and you are THAT, you can’t possible be anything separate or apart from THAT. The word non duality is only a label, it is not the actuality of “what is”. The word awareness is not the actual awareness itself. These are just concepts or pointers to THAT essence that you are.
The word can never be the thing that it re-presents. The word ‘fire’ will not burn your mouth. You cannot cook with the word ‘fire’. See that the so called word is never the thing and yet words are useful for labeling things and for pointing to this ineffable, inexpressible, immediacy that is your true nature or natural state. Does nature have an ego, any static or fixed reference point? Is nature ever born at any time, or is it timeless, spontaneous, and ever-present, utterly unborn, unceasing and natural, as in nature?
Take your instructions from nature then, just as it is. Leave everything as it is, unaltered, unmodified, uncorrected without preference, partiality, or comparison. See directly for yourself that there is no one there, no separate entity there as such, who could change, alter, modify, or correct anything, and let everything ‘be’, “as it is”, in this natural state. See for yourself that you as you appear as that entity So and So, the aging, changing image that appears in your mirror each morning is the child of a barren woman, an utter fiction, an illusion.
You are not what you take yourself to be. You are not the body or the mind, you are the awareness that the body and the mind are appearing in. The body and the mind are ‘appearing’ in awareness, not the other way round. See that this awareness that you truly and ever are is totally independent of any body or mind. Can the body and the mind function independently from awareness? A dead body has eyes, ears, a brain, hands and legs etc, however without the aware essence or presence the body is an empty shell, a corpse.
There can be awareness without consciousness as in deep sleep, trance, etc, but there cannot be consciousness without awareness, therefore see that awareness-emptiness is the very base and foundation of every apparent thing, it is prior to consciousness and ever-existent, and you are THAT non dual awareness, you can’t possibly be anything apart from THAT aware no thing. You are the total opposite of what you ‘appear’ to be as that limited time-bound human being. Don’t take any body’s word for this, LOOK and see for yourself – you are the authority there where you truly are at zero degrees from yourself.
No one else is there at zero degrees from where you are who can tell you who and what you ever are, simply because you yourself are the only one there where the actual seeing is taking place from. There where you are you are not seeing through someone elses’ eyes but rather you are seeing through this single, boundless, edgeless, eye or window, however there is no glass at all in this so called window. There where you are seeing from, there is boundless clarity and emptiness and there is not even a speck of dust in this limitless space where you are and where you are seeing from. There are objects further out, however notice for the first time in your life, fresh and new, that the very first thing that you are seeing is SPACE.
Turn your attention around 180 degrees and directly SEE the infinitely empty space there where your human head was assumed to be. What a total shock and infinitely pleasant recognition – re-cognition that there you yourself are the First Person, Present tense, Singular – I am THAT I am! You are the very first and original Person – I am THAT! The Mahavakya or great word of Hinduism – I am existing infinitely and eternally, One without a second, as it is pointed out in Advaita Vedanta. I am the only One that ever was or is – there ‘are’ no others now or ever – no duality in this deathless essence. My god, there never has been and there never will be anything apart from THAT non dual Absolute, and – I am THAT!
This is then what is meant by ignorance, Maya, or illusion, and that is, that all this time; (and I should not be even using that word ‘time’, because time is only imagination, a mental concept or construct) I’ve simply been duped by illusion. Reality – unborn, spontaneous, ever-fresh presence awareness has never changed or altered in any way – THIS is it, and I am THAT. This ‘apparent’ triad – the individual soul, the world, and God never existed in the first place, they are illusory appearances like silver in the mother of pearl. Simply see THIS and be this naked non conceptual awareness – this immediacy that you cannot negate.
Nothing ever happened – it only ‘appeared’ to – reality is “as it is”. Leave it like that and start from the ‘fact’ that you already are THAT, then whatever thoughts and concepts that arise or come up to try to tell you that you are not THAT, just scrape them away and see them for what they are – empty thoughts and concepts without any substance or independent nature of their own apart from this ever-present naked awareness.Read More »
