Notes from Kings Cross, Monday, 1st August 2022

What is being said and pointed to here is not the same old stuff that is being trotted out by a lot of teachers over and over again; this is fresh and new from moment to moment and has never been said before at all.  Whether it is heard and received that way is only possible if the listening is also fresh and new.  If you are listening from the dead past, the “me” of memory and not from this living presence then you are not really hearing or listening at all, but are only looking to reinforce your own dead concepts, acquired memories and ideas.

Drop all your concepts for once in your life at least.  Full stop with all of that mental chatter and notice where that leaves you.  When you pause or stop the thinking even momentarily notice what you are left with.  Isn’t there a naked non conceptual awareness of knowing still present there with you even when there is no thinking taking place, the silent watcher?  This presence awareness if it is noticed, acknowledged, and delved into in a simple and direct way will be found to be Omnipresent, Omnipotent, and Omniscient.  Don’t take my word for it, don’t take anyone’s word for This, have a look for yourself.

This fact that I am That non conceptual awareness is consciousness-bliss.  Am I aware, am I conscious?  Stop right there. don’t immediately go back into the time-bound mind of memory and try to work out what is being said here.  There is no mind at all when you directly look for it.  Mind is time and time is a mental concept, a material process, it is never the actual.  Past and future are only recalled and imagined from this now or Omnipresence.  What time is there if you don’t think about it?  None at all, just This all-presence.  Thought breeds fear if it is not understood and it has no place at all in this enquiry and in the psyche of man.  Thought is a useful instrument for daily functioning but apart from that it is destructive and breeds endless conflict.  Why should this be so, because it is limited.

What is thought?  Thought is only a vibration, a movement of energy and has no separate existence as such.  There is only thinking, this ever-present activity of knowing.  There is no thinker of a thought, nor is there a thought separate from the thinking itself.  Thoughts arise spontaneously and depart the same way unless they are fixated upon.  The thought ‘I think’ cannot think, it is only a translation, thinking is happening just like the grass growing by itself.  Why try to take credit for it and claim it as a personal achievement?  Who thinks they are thinking these thoughts, isn’t it just ego “me”?  Nothing has happened at all in that sense, ‘what is’, unborn presence awareness has never changed, why did you change?  See if you have changed, This is the ignorance that we are trying to draw your attention to.  Reality – This non dual absolute cannot change or alter in any way, if it could it would not be That.

“Some may argue that this universe of duality(multiple existences) is a factual second reality, clearly seen by the senses operated by the mind.  But then, are the senses anything apart from the mind?  Can they function without the support of the mind in which they are embedded?  What is this mind except a bundle of thoughts?  What are thoughts except evanescent ripples in the still limitless ocean of pure Being-Awareness-Self, which is the sole existence without a second?”

Why not take this to heart and live as THAT non dual absolute?  Astavakra – Knowledge of the Self. 5.  Attachment and abhorrence are attributes of the mind.  The mind is never yours.  You are Intelligence itself, free from conflict, and changeless.  Go about happily.

4.  You are not the body, nor is the body yours; you are not the doer nor the enjoyer.  you are Consciousness itself, the eternal Witness, and free.  Go about happily.

Let us have a look at a quote from the book I AM THAT.  Talks with Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.  Translated from the Marathi tape recordings by Maurice Frydman, page 413, which may provide a key to Self-realization so to speak.

M.  Give your heart and mind to brooding over the ‘I am’, what is it, how is it, what is its source, its life, its meaning.  It is very much like digging a well.  You reject all that is not water, till you reach the life giving spring.

The limited only is perfectable.  The unlimited is already perfect.  You are perfect, only you don’t know it.  Learn to know yourself and you will discover wonders.

All you need is already within you, only you must approach yourself with reverence and love.  Self-condemnation and self-distrust are grievous errors.  Your constant flight from pain and search for pleasure is a sign of love you bear for yourself, all I plead with you is this: make love of yourself perfect.  Deny yourself nothing — give yourself infinity and eternity and discover that you do not need them; you are beyond. –  End of quote.

There it is, take it or leave it.  A very wise counsel no doubt but everything is in your hands, never anothers, no matter how well intentioned others may be.  As long as there is another, two or more, there must be fear.  Not two, never two in the non dual.  This has to be seen and lived, you can’t borrow it from anyone.  That is what being a light to yourself means.  Investigate this light in oneself that is self-shining, self-existing, naked, non conceptual awareness or what we call The Great Perfection.  I say this to dare you to think big — I am whole, perfect, strong, powerful, loving, harmonious and happy.  I am That.  This is the truth that makes you free.  You are always free, contrary to appearances.

“When you realize not God but the Self.  His realization even for a moment, wipes out all past and makes you free from all future stain and trouble.

The sense of being(I consciousness) — was absent for 9 months(in the womb, and sometime later)

——- So long as there is no beingness there are no wants

Everything begins with the beginning of your beingness.  You act because of your wants.

In a sage there are no wants and hence actions are absent.

This is difficult for some to understand , and very easy for others.” – Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

Everything is happening spontaneously, without any doership.  No amount of action or doing can give you this understanding.  Choices are made, deeds are done but there is no choice maker, no doer.  This is freedom from karma which is cause and effect.  If things or happenings are not being referred back to a cause, namely I or me, what effect can there be?  You can’t have an effect without a cause, so if the cause is seen to be false then the effect must disappear by itself.  The effects are my anger, fear, depression, satisfaction or lack of it etc.  All these effects must disappear if there is no cause to refer them back to.  My house, my body, my mind, my car; who is the owner of these things?  There isn’t any owner at all, everything is That, non dual absolute.  Can there be anything added to or taken away from the absolute?  Of course not, otherwise it would not be absolute.

“Non dual devotion is devotion to our Self.  Pay attention to “That” which is always with you.  You must feel its necessity.

Leave greatness to others.  Become so small that no one can see you.  This conviction results from growing devotion to the Supreme reality.  To remain without thought in the waking state is the greatest worship.

Those who teach and those who learn both pass away.  Whatever you take yourself to be will come to an end.

Realize now that duality never existed; it is illusory.  All this  was never really created, yet it is moving about.  To the awakened sage, no one lives or dies.

Obe without the sense of duality has no occupation, no intention or desire, and no sense of doership.

 Nisargadatta Maharaj

“Do not remain in the dualistic state avoid such pursuits carefully.  If there is even a trace of this and that, right and wrong, the Mind-essence  will be lost in confusion.  Although all dualities come from the One, do not be attached even to this One.  When the mind exists undisturbed in the Way, nothing in the world can offend, and when a thing can no longer offend, it ceases to exist in the old way.”

Do things exist apart from the awareness of them or are they awareness itself?  This needs to be seen, realized and lived for oneself.  Awareness is the fundamental principle, a limitless intelligence that is the base of all, an emptiness suffused with awareness which has the innate capacity to cognize, to recognize, to know itself.  It is no thing to the time-bound mind.  To the acquired mind it is nothing at all, something like space that doesn’t stand out or announce itself, yet without its presence the mind would not be able to function or to know anything at all.  Rigpa in Dzogchen, the most profound expression of Buddhism is emptiness suffused with awareness.  This awareness-emptiness has infinite power and potential, it is like space which is nothing at all, it doesn’t stand out and yet there is no boundaries, center or limits to it and that is why it is terrifying to the time-bound mind of memory, the imagined person and so it is being ignored, because the “me”, So and So, does not want to be nothing which is Suchness.  In this world of Suchness there is neither self nor other than self.  When all things are seen equally the timeless Self essence is revealed.  No comparisons or analogies are possible in this causeless, relationless state.  There is no relationship in this Suchness it is non dual, not two, One without a second as is pointed to in Advaita Vedanta.

Just see, the very first thing you are seeing is actually space, there are objects further out but they are not and cannot be apart from this basic space of phenomena.  Space-like awareness, naked non conceptual knowing, see and know directly — I am That.  This is the very confirmation of that great mantra or Word of Hinduism in Advaita — I am That.  There is no duality in That non dual absolute, it is a neutral state, there is no becoming in it, no time, it is timeless and eternal — tat tvam asi — “Thou Art That,” a famous Vedantic mahavakya.

Knowledge Of The Self.  Astavakra said: 3.  The knowledge of the Truth makes an eloquent, wise, and active person mute, inert, and inactive.  Therefore it is shunned by those who want to enjoy the world.

Who is the enjoyer?  Isn’t it “me” Mr or Mrs So and So.  Now this fellow up here in Kings Cross is telling you that there is no me.  Just have a fresh look for yourself there at zero degrees from where the actual so-called seeing is taking place and if you can find a “me” there then come back and tell me.  Where the seeing is happening here there is just a boundless, edgeless space or window without any glass and without even a speck of dust in it where the seeing is taking place in and which contains anything and everything within itself so to speak.  There are no eyes or head or neck or body or mind, nothing like that at all, just a limitless emptiness-awareness.  This choiceless, effortless awareness is enlightenment.  See whether right here and now you are not aware.

If you are aware right here and now, what effort are you making?  I suggest that awareness is effortless and self-existing and this is what needs to be seen and acknowledged.  Unborn, unoriginated, uncreated non conceptual awareness is what you truly are inspite of the mind’s activity.”It is the nature of the mind to wander.  You are not the mind.  The mind springs up and sinks down.  It is impermanent, transitory, whereas you are eternal…….

To inhere in the Self is the thing.  Never mind the mind…… the realized man the mind may be active or inactive, the Self alone remains for him.”

             (Ramana Maharshi)

SAMSARA (The world of objects) is sorrow.

Men want absolute and permanent happiness.

This does not reside in objects but in the absolute.  It is peace, free from pain and pleasure.

 It is a neutral state.

      Self-realization is bliss.

Bliss is not something to be acquired.  You are a;ways bliss……..get rid of your ignorance which

makes you think that you are other than bliss.

Happiness is inherent and not due to external causes.  One must realize oneself in order to open

 the store of unalloyed happiness.

—– From ‘Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi’

None of this is for believing.  All is for testing.  Look for yourself!  This is for confirming and living in your own direct experience.  Just giving lip service to all this and saying, yes, I am not the body, mind etc while being fully identified with the egoic entity “me” will be totally useless and counter productive.  One has to do one’s own inner work and so live and breathe this understanding.

“What do you want to gain by practicing spirituality?  Realize “That” which is the root of all that is true and everlasting.  Otherwise it is only entertainment.”

       (Nisargadatta Maharaj)

Events and activities occur like grass growing by itself.

Re-call, re-cognize, or re-mind, I am That I am.  That is awareness.  To whom could it matter what activity, thought, event, or happening occurs.  Knowing That, events and activities occur like grass growing by itself, with nothing superior or inferior which could possibly be anything other than That.  Self-activated intelligence energy; just this, nothing else.

Everything in essence is that changeless natural knowing.

It is an illusion that “you” exist, the entity “you” is imagined.  The imagination that  “you” exist as something or someone separate, is the cause of acceptance or rejection of something known.  It is illusion telling the story of its own deception.

The knower and the known are just concepts seemingly dividing non-conceptual knowing.  Believing in the thought “I am” gives seeming reality to the objective world which is constantly changing, yet everything in essence is that changeless natural knowing – nothing else.

Beyond Mind, there is  no suffering – page 270, I AM THAT

M:  Man’s fivefold body(physical etc) holds potential powers beyond our wildest dreams.  Not only is the entire universe reflected in man, but also the power to control the universe is waiting to be used by him.  The wise man is not anxious to use such powers, except when the situation calls for them.  He finds the abilities and skills of the human personality quite adequate for the business of daily living….Some powers can be developed by specialized training, but the man who flaunts such powers is still in bondage.  The wise man counts nothing as his own.  When at some time and place some miracle is attributed  to some person, he will not establish any causal link between events and people, nor will he allow any conclusions to be drawn…..All happened as it happened because it had to happen; everything happens as it does, because the universe is as it is.

 Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.
